Health officials confirmed 53,711 new COVID-19 infections over the past 24 hours, bringing California's total case count to 1.67 million since the pandemic began.

The enormous leap in cases exceeded the state's previous daily record, established last week, by roughly 17,000 cases. It also surpassed single-day infection records set by all other U.S. states throughout the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The state has confirmed over 200,000 new infections since last Wednesday, and official data indicates at least 30,000 California residents have tested positive for COVID-19 every day since then.

The state confirmed its highest single-day death toll on Tuesday, with 293 new fatalities. Nearly 21,500 people have passed away in California as a result of COVID-19 this year.

California's hospitalizations and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions have soared with rising infection rates, leading Governor Gavin Newsom to announce a regional stay-at-home order to be issued in all counties where critical care units' capacities rise above 85 percent.

The state is reporting unnerving numbers: California has set nationwide records for new cases again and again in the past week — most recently on Wednesday, when it posted more than 41,000 infections. If California were a country, it would be among the world leaders in new coronavirus cases, ahead of India, Germany and Britain.

The number of available beds in intensive care units is plummeting. In the San Joaquin Valley, hospitals ran out over the weekend, resorting to “surge capacity.” And in Southern California, a region that includes Los Angeles and San Diego, ICU capacity dipped to just 0.5 percent Wednesday.

California is seeing a record number of deaths as all of the Bay Area is now under a stay-at-home order.

In just one day, more than 370 people died from COVID-19 — setting a record in the state.

Meanwhile thousands of infections continue to surge as ICU bed capacity remains threatened.

Grim milestones continue to be reached as the Bay Area struggles in the fight against COVID-19.

The state saw more than 52,000 new cases as the death toll is also climbing.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in California has surpassed 2 million, according to Johns Hopkins University, as the virus has spread with startling speed in the state.

It's the first state to pass that number. In the last day, according to Johns Hopkins, California saw 43,986 new cases and 319 deaths.

More than 19,700 people are currently hospitalized with the virus, with more than 4,000 people in intensive care.

ICU capacity is under enormous strain. By the state's count, there were 1,302 ICU beds available in a state of nearly 40 million people.

In Los Angeles County, the Times found that as of 9 a.m. Sunday, there were just 30 available ICU beds – a county that's home to 10 million people.

California has seen more than 23,600 coronavirus-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

As of Dec. 28, California had 99.7 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days, according to data compiled on the New York Times coronavirus tracker — far exceeding all other states including No. 2 Arizona and No. 3 Tennessee, with 84.9 and 78.8, respectively.

But California is among the half-dozen states where past-week average cases per day have increased — and its rate of 24% is by far the highest. Texas and Maine grew by 18%, Georgia by 12%, South Carolina by 11% and New York by 10%.

California saw a record 66,811 new coronavirus cases on Monday, according to The Chronicle’s coronavirus tracker.

California on Thursday became the third state to surpass 25,000 COVID deaths, following New York and Texas. In Los Angeles County, many funeral homes are filled to capacity, and health care professionals feel as if they're under siege.

Hospitals in Southern California are at the breaking point with 1 in 5 COVID-19 tests coming back positive.

"It's just utter chaos," said nurse Tavonia Ekwegh, who runs the ER at Anaheim Global Medical Center. Tents outside the medical center are filling up.

"It is a war zone, we have ambulance run after ambulance run," Ekwegh said.

"People will die in the hallways of our hospitals," Garcetti said. "Our behavior will dictate whether people live or die as much as any action the hospital takes."

"When 95% of people are doing the right thing, it's still dangerous, let alone when 80% of people are doing the right thing, and it's disastrous," Garcetti said.

California started the new year by reporting a record 585 coronavirus deaths in a single day after a health official said the pandemic was pushing state hospitals to the “brink of catastrophe” as some medical centers scramble to provide oxygen for the critically ill.

The California Department of Public Health on Friday reported more than than 47,189 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to nearly 2.3 million. Nearly 26,000 people have died from the virus in the state.

More than 7,600 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in Los Angeles County, which has a fourth of the state’s population of 40 million but has seen 40% of its virus deaths. LA County on Friday reported 20,414 new confirmed virus cases and 207 additional deaths.

As communities across the country feel the pain of a surge in coronavirus cases, funeral homes in the hot spot of Southern California say they must turn away grieving families as they run out of space for the bodies piling up.

“I’ve been in the funeral industry for 40 years and never in my life did I think that this could happen, that I’d have to tell a family, ‘No, we can’t take your family member,’” said Magda Maldonado, owner of Continental Funeral Home in Los Angeles.

Continental is averaging about 30 body removals a day — six times its normal rate. Mortuary owners are calling one another to see whether anyone can handle overflow, and the answer is always the same: They’re full, too.

Achermann said that in the southern part of the state, “every funeral home I talk to says, ‘We’re paddling as fast as we can.’"

“The volume is just incredible and they fear that they won’t be able to keep up,” he said. “And the worst of the surge could still be ahead of us.”

California has averaged 37,000 new cases a day over the last week, down from a high of 45,000 in mid-December.

On Monday, California posted its sixth-highest daily tally of COVID-19 deaths: 379. The average over the last week was 353 a day, the highest yet. The state’s cumulative fatalities top 27,300.

Though the figures dipped around New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the number of coronavirus-positive patients hospitalized statewide rose to 21,597 Monday, a new record. Of those patients, 4,634 were in intensive care units.

Health officials in San Joaquin County reported Monday that the need for intensive care had reached an all-time high, with adult ICUs at 175% above their licensed bed capacity.

California health officials added 695 deaths related to the novel coronavirus Saturday, a record high since the pandemic began. The total death toll is now 29,233 in the state.

Health care workers in the state account for 74,589 of total confirmed cases and 281 of total deaths.
https://www.kcra.com/article/2-hurt-nor ... y/35171091
Meanwhile, hospitalizations are nearly 22,000, and state models project the number could reach 30,000 by Feb 1.

A surge of cases following Halloween and Thanksgiving produced record hospitalizations in California, and now the most seriously ill of those patients are dying in unprecedented numbers.

Already, many hospitals in Los Angeles and other hard-hit areas are struggling to keep up and warned they may need to ration care as intensive care beds dwindle.

The state reported 468 deaths on Sunday, a day after setting a record one-day total of 695, according to the Department of Public Health. California’s death toll since the start of the pandemic rose to 29,701.

Meanwhile, hospitalizations are nearly 22,000, and state models project that number could reach 30,000 by Feb 1.

“We’ve never seen this much death before,” Avila told the newspaper. “I’ve been in health care for 22 years, and I’ve never been scared. Right now, I am … I fear for my children.”

With new figures released Saturday, the county surpassed 12,000 deaths caused by COVID-19 — 1,000 of which happened in the previous four days.

The coronavirus death toll in California reached 30,000 on Monday, another staggering milestone as the nation’s most populous state endures the worst surge of the nearly yearlong pandemic.

Newly confirmed infections are rising at a dizzying rate of more than a quarter-million a week and during the weekend a record 1,163 deaths were reported.

California has deployed 88 refrigerated trailers to use as makeshift morgues mostly in hard-hit Southern California, where traditional storage space is dwindling.

Acceptance will vary by region, they acknowledged, but said a state survey found only about 2% of University of California medical system healthcare workers had declined the vaccine, while 81% of residents at five state-operated veterans’ homes had been vaccinated.

About 900 bodies are currently being held at the Los Angeles Medical Examiner Coroner's Office, which usually has a capacity of 500, according to spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani. She estimates that about 150 of the bodies are overflow from local hospitals that have run out of room.

Since the initial Covid-19 surge last spring, a dozen refrigerated storage units have been on site at the downtown location. A dozen more trailers will be in place by next week, along with six refrigerated containers, Ardalani told CNN.

The number of available ICU beds has also dropped to the lowest level recorded yet, according to data from the California Department of Public Health.

There are currently 1,094 ICU beds available for California's 40 million residents. More than 22,000 people are hospitalized with the virus, and nearly 5,000 of them are in intensive care units.

With 25,246 new cases around the state on Thursday, according to data compiled by this news organization, California has reported its fewest infections over the past week than any other seven-day period since the second week of December — 29% fewer than the week before. But as cases decrease, California is still in the midst of its deadliest period of the pandemic.

For the second time in the past three days, California topped its previous record for deaths, with 740 recorded around the state on Thursday. No week has topped the one that ended last Thursday, when 3,737 Californians perished from the virus, an average of more than 533 per day, but the state’s death toll is climbing again. The past seven days have produced 3,476 fatalities — an average of nearly 500 per day — and with more than 9,700 in its first 21 days, January has already exceeded the state’s deadliest previous month by nearly 3,000 fatalities.

Los Angeles County and its neighbors in Southern California continue to report the largest numbers of deaths in California, but a trio of counties in the Bay Area also added substantial increases to their death tolls for the second straight day.

LA County led the state with 257 fatalities on Wednesday, followed by 63 in Riverside County. San Diego, Orange and Ventura counties also ranked among the top 10, with 48, 38 and 29, respectively. But Alameda County, with 53 fatalities reported Wednesday, had the day’s third-highest death toll in the state, while Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties weren’t far behind, with 29 and 18 of their own.

According to Thursday’s end-of-day totals from California public health websites, there were 562 fewer hospitalizations from the previous day, for a total of 16,581 hospitalizations. That’s a 24.4% decline from the Jan. 1 high of 21,938 people hospitalized from COVID-related infections.

The 14-day average of 26,694 new cases Thursday was a 37% decline from the Jan. 16 high of 42,468.

California communities reported 19,661 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to 3,252,973. There were 591 new deaths reported Thursday, for a total number of 39,545 people who have died from the virus.

California recorded its 40,000th COVID-19 death on Friday, propelled past the tragic milestone by a winter surge that has seen cases and deaths skyrocket in a state once seen as a model for effectively combating the coronavirus.

Almost exactly one year after the coronavirus was first detected in California, one in every 1,000 state residents has died from the virus. On Friday, counties reported 641 fatalities from COVID-19, according to data tracked by this news organization, bringing the total to 40,186. California now has a weekly average of 546 deaths per day

It took six months for California to record its first 10,000 deaths, then four months to double to 20,000. In just five more weeks the state reached 30,000. It then took only 20 days to get to 40,000.

California on Sunday reported another 481 coronavirus deaths, a day after the statewide death toll topped 40,000 even as the rates of new infections and hospitalizations continue to fall.

The state said that the number of people in the hospital with COVID-19 slipped below 14,850 — a drop of more than 25% in two weeks.

The 18,974 new confirmed cases are about one-third the mid-December peak of 54,000.

Deaths remain staggeringly high, however, with more than 3,800 in the last week.

It took six months for California to record its first 10,000 deaths, then four months to double to 20,000. In just five more weeks the state reached 30,000. It then took only 20 days to get to 40,000. On Sunday deaths rose to 40,697, while total cases topped 3.2 million.

On Friday, California counties reported 14,170 new COVID-19 cases, according to data tracked by this news organization. The state now has a seven-day average of 14,708 daily cases, the lowest it’s been since Dec. 1. On a recent Jan. 10 peak, the state was averaging 44,629 new cases.

Hospitalizations have also been trending downward — the number of patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 cases declined 3.1 percent on Thursday, to 12,863. That’s the fewest patients hospitalized since Dec. 11, and a 41 percent drop from a Jan. 6 peak. The number of patients in intensive care unit beds with confirmed cases of COVID-19 also declined 5.6 percent on Thursday, to 3,432. That’s the fewest ICU patients since Dec. 16 and a 42 percent decline from an early-January peak.

Despite the improving case and hospitalization numbers, deaths continue at near-record levels in California, where counties reported 536 COVID-19 fatalities on Friday, for a seven-day average of 489 daily deaths.

The 7,692 new cases — reported by a small selection of county health departments that issue updates on weekends and compiled by this news organization — were the fewest in California over 24 hours in 11 weeks, with the exceptions of Christmas and Thanksgiving.

However, deaths continue to come at a pace of approximately 458 per day over the past week, after there were another 159 reported on Sunday.

California saw one of its largest single-day drop offs in COVID-positive hospital patients in the most recent 24 hours of data available from the state, falling by a net of 650 patients — or about 5% in just one day — to 11,695 as of Saturday, its lowest active total in almost exactly two months

The 159 deaths reported in California on Sunday pushed the state’s death toll over 44,000 and within a few hundred of New York for the most of any state throughout the pandemic.
