Hospitalized residents again totaled 105 on Tuesday with 16 in intensive care. There are now 3,651 residents known to be infected with the virus, and the state announced an additional 419 positive cases on Tuesday.

Sanford Health in Bismarck announced it will open a new unit inside its medical center to keep up with the increasing number of new patients it has seen this month. The unit will add an additional 14 beds, which includes six beds for patients in intensive care.

The state's death toll is now at 239 individuals

Representatives for the state's largest medical providers, including Sanford Health, Essential Health and Altru Health, say they still have room for coronavirus patients but are finding themselves squeezed by an onslaught of non-pandemic-related cases that are taxing hospital resources.

Essentia Health in Fargo has seen a high number of patients needing care at the facility in recent weeks, "resulting in our facility being at or near capacity," said Dr. Richard Vetter, Essentia's chief medical officer, and Nicole Christensen, chief nursing officer, in a joint emailed statement.

At Sanford Bismarck Medical Center, the facility's COVID-19 unit is nearly full as they continue to see a rise in inpatient admissions.

"Our COVID unit is certainly the busiest it’s been since the pandemic started. We can care for 25 patients in our COVID unit. Currently, we have 23 patients in our COVID unit," said Dr. Danielle Thurtle, interim chief medical officer at Sanford Health in Bismarck.

North Dakota has seen roughly an 80 percent increase in confirmed coronavirus cases, with the state currently leading the nation in terms of the number of infections per capita.

Joshua Wynne, from the University of North Dakota, told Newsweek that the latest trends are "disturbing and headed in the wrong direction," with other experts criticizing the state government's response to the pandemic.

The state's rate of infection has increased 600 percent since June and it is currently experiencing "uncontrolled spread," leaving its most vulnerable individuals at risk, Mark Cameron from Case Western Reserve University told Newsweek.

Cameron said the lack of a mask mandate could be an important factor. While Republican Governor Doug Burgum has advocated for the use of masks—appealing to residents' sense of personal responsibility—he has rejected the idea of issuing a statewide mandate, and North Dakota is currently one of the few states without one.

There is no comparison [to other states]—we have no actual, mandated restrictions nor plan nor enforcements of 'guidelines,'" Shelley Lenz, Burgum's Democratic opponent, told Newsweek.

The state Department of Health reported 112 individuals hospitalized from COVID on Monday, up one from a previous record reached on Friday, Oct. 2. Twenty four of those people are in intensive care.

And while the strain on statewide hospital bed availability was alleviated slightly on Monday compared to late last week, the situation remains dire in certain local hot spots. Bismarck, Dickinson and Minot are all managing especially heavy patient volumes, leaving just one ICU bed in Bismarck on Monday, three in Dickinson and two in Minot. All three health systems also reported shortages of inpatient beds, down to just eight in Bismarck, two in Dickinson and two in Minot.

The state reported 312 new cases Monday, with active cases coming down from the end of last week, to 3,693 positive individuals.

The department reported three new virus-related deaths on Monday

Over the last five weeks, the pandemic death toll in North Dakota has taken alarming jump. In September, 109 people died of the virus, 41% of North Dakota's total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. And in just the first five days of October, the state has reported the deaths of another 30 people.

Twenty-four more people in North Dakota were reported dead from COVID-19 on Wednesday, Oct. 7, more than the number reported on any other day of the pandemic in the state.

That's more deaths reported in North Dakota on Wednesday than in the entire months of March, April, June or July each. And as the death toll has spiked over the last month in North Dakota, the state has also continued to report the most new cases per capita of any state in the country for multiple consecutive weeks, according to The New York Times.

304 people have died from complications related to the coronavirus in North Dakota since March, according to the Department of Health. Deaths have been spiking in North Dakota over the last five weeks, and the state reports that 116 people died during the month of September. In just the first seven days of October, another 41 people have died.

The massive mid-week death toll comes as the North Dakota health system has experienced a shortage of hospital beds in the last two weeks.

North Dakota reported 495 new COVID cases on Wednesday, bringing the statewide active case total up to 3,706.

Monday, North Dakota's department of health reported 475 new COVID-19 cases—a figure double the number of non-ICU hospital beds available in the state.

there are currently 240 non-ICU staffed inpatient beds available across the state's 45 health facilities. As of Monday, October 12, there are 158 hospitalizations in North Dakota.

Only 20 ICU beds are available at this time and more than half of those beds are located in the city of Fargo

North Dakota has recorded a steady rise in infections since the July Fourth long weekend.

"The number of cases continue to climb due to the fact that many in the community are carrying on activities as they did prior to the pandemic," Moch said. "There are large gatherings and weddings taking place with no social distancing measures implemented and a majority do not wear masks in public which leads to increased cases and clusters."

Republican Governor Doug Burgum has refused to issue a statewide mask mandate to help curb the spread of the virus.

"Our elected officials, at this point in time, have declined to institute mask mandates, or mandatory limits on gathering sizes
," Moch said.
