South Dakota has one of the highest rates of COVID-19 spread in the country, several reports show, as the Midwest experiences a surge in cases.

The state ranked second in the country for both rates of new cases and test positivity in the latest report from the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

According to Johns Hopkins University, as of Tuesday, the state's seven-day average testing positivity rate was 26% -- the highest in the country.

South Dakota reported a record number of daily new cases on Sept. 26, with 579. The next day, it reported a record number of current hospitalizations, with 216, according to the COVID Tracking Project.

As of Wednesday evening, hospital bed capacity was at 57% and ICU bed capacity at 75%, according to state data.

Last month, South Dakota hosted a massive motorcycle rally that had at least 100 COVID-19 cases in eight states traced back to it.

South Dakota has retaken the top spot for most COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people, according to the New York Times.

The state went from No. 2 to No. 1, passing North Dakota, for the coronavirus case trend data from the past seven days. South Dakota was also home to the most cases per 100,000 people in early September.

South Dakota has reported 3,517 cases in the past seven days ending Oct. 7 — 398 per 100,000 people.

COVID-19 cases are surging across the country, but South Dakota and North Dakota are the only states exceeding 300 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days.

South Dakota is third with deaths in the past seven days per 100,000 with 4.0.

South Dakota has reported 35 deaths in that timeframe. Fourteen additional deaths were reported Thursday, which hasn't been included in the New York Times data. Total, South Dakota has reported 274 deaths.

An infectious disease doctor with the Sanford School of Medicine says he's concerned that rising COVID-19 cases in South Dakota could swamp the state's health care system.

But the rapid rise in cases over the last several days might not be sustainable.

The South Dakota Department of Health reported Tuesday that 302 people with COVID-19 were in state hospitals. The previous record was 284 on Oct. 8.

Tuesday's report included 414 new positive infections. That pushed the seven-day average of new infections to 579 per day. At the beginning of the month, that average was 434.

The new infections included two days with more than 700.
