With Iowa breaking records for the number of COVID-19 patients being treated in hospitals time after time after time this week, federal coronavirus experts are admonishing state officials to take more aggressive steps to fight the disease’s spread, including advising that public and private gatherings in 68 counties “be as small as possible and optimally, not extend beyond immediate family.”

“Ninety percent of all counties in Iowa have moderate or high levels of community transmission (yellow, orange, or red zones), with 49 percent having high levels of community transmission (red zone),” the report said. Iowa recorded 238 new coronavirus cases per 100,000 population in the week ending Oct. 17 — far worse than the national average of 117.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who has issued emergency health orders that do not include a face mask mandate nor a limit on group sizes, has not scheduled a televised news conference in over a week.

Iowa public health data shows hospitalizations because of the virus continue to soar.

The state reported 536 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 in a 24-hour period ending at 11 a.m. Friday. That set a record for the third time this week for the number of people being treated for the disease in hospitals.

But as social distancing measures eased in late summer, the number of hospitalizations began to climb.

On Sept. 19, the state reported 269 people were hospitalized in Iowa for COVID-19. By Wednesday, Oct. 21, that rate had nearly doubled to 534. On the same day, Iowa recorded a daily record of 31 deaths from COVID-19.

Iowa is one of 37 states that are reporting increasing COVID-19 hospitalizations, including 21 states that have recently reported records or are near their previous records and are still reporting increases, experts at Johns Hopkins University reported Wednesday. Much of the surge is in the Midwest.

Patients have been filling up the emergency department, waiting for a room so they can be admitted into inpatient areas, she said.

Salinas said the epidemic could have been controlled if Iowa leaders had taken stronger steps, including requiring people to wear masks in public places and ordering the closure of bars in areas of high transmission.

"There is so far no indication that this thing is slowing down," Baeth said. "...We can't just wish this pandemic away. It's time the public starts making some sacrifices so we can get through this together."

"The trajectory is not sustainable," said Dr. Nicole Gilg, a leading physician at Broadlawns Medical Center. "We currently are at the turning point, if not already a little bit past it, where we need to immediately act. We don't have more time to wait and see."

The county, like the rest of the state, is suffering record-breaking numbers of coronavirus infections and hospitalizations for COVID-19, the deadly disease the virus causes.

Denise Cundy, chief nursing officer for UnityPoint Health-Des Moines, said a rising number of hospital staff members are having to stay home sick or quarantine because they were exposed to the virus. That means exhausted co-workers must care for even more patients.

Cundy said fatigued staffers worry that they're not providing the quality of care that patients deserve.
