Seven months into the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s beginning to feel a lot like March again in the Land of Lincoln.

The state’s top doctor fought back tears Friday while making her most impassioned plea yet for residents to follow basic health guidelines as Illinois’ autumn coronavirus resurgence means many front-line health care workers “are seeing history repeat itself.”

“Excuse me, please,’ Illinois Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said, turning her back and pausing for nearly 40 seconds during the daily briefing, as Gov. J.B. Pritker and others offered her tissues.

she outlined the latest 3,874 cases of the disease confirmed statewide. The seventh highest caseload of the entire pandemic capped a week of record-breaking infection numbers that sent testing positivity rates shooting up statewide.

Officials also announced 31 more deaths have been attributed to the virus

The pandemic death toll has risen to 9,418 since March, and it’s poised to balloon at an increasingly troubling rate as Illinois hospitals treat the most coronavirus patients they’ve seen since early June. Nearly 2,500 hospital beds were occupied by coronavirus patients as of Thursday night, with 511 in intensive care units and 197 using ventilators.

Illinois public health officials announced 4,729 new cases of COVID-19, along with 17 additional deaths Monday.

As of Sunday night, 2,638 people were hospitalized in Illinois with COVID-19, with 589 in the ICU and 238 on ventilators.

"Cases, positivity, hospitalizations are all rising across the state of Illinois and we have got to reverse the trend," Gov. Pritzker said.

"If what we're seeing today does not reverse, we are on a path to see more than 11,000 deaths in Illinois this year," said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director, Illinois Department of Public Health.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Illinois now stands at 378,985, with 9,522 deaths, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported.

"The resurgence of COVID-19 infections and deaths across Illinois has begun," said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Dept. of Public Health. "If I haven't made it clear, we are in that second wave that we have been alluding to for months."

As of Monday night, 2,758 people were hospitalized in Illinois with COVID-19, with 595 in the ICU and 241 on ventilators.

This week, the state has seen an average of 4,747 cases per day, double the cases in the state from three weeks ago. On Wednesday, Illinois reported 6,110 cases and 51 deaths, the second-highest number of cases ever reported in a single day, Chicago's ABC affiliate reported.

Public health administrator Sandra Martell has been threatened with lawsuits from bar owners who want to continue to offer indoor service in violation of the governor's orders, reports NPR member station WITF's Christine Herman on Morning Edition.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike told Morning Edition host David Greene that her office would prefer "to focus our energy on educating the public and getting the right data to them, but instead, we're now dividing our efforts on two fronts, trying to combat people who are actively working against what will keep our community safe.

The news comes as state health officials on Sunday announced 6,980 new cases and an additional 35 coronavirus-related deaths.

Pritzker, who hinted last week the peak of this outbreak is still nowhere in sight, said the mitigation measures are being put in place to help limit the spread of the virus.

“As cases, hospitalizations and deaths are rising across our state, across the Midwest and across the nation, we have to act responsibly and collectively to protect the people we love,” Pritzker said in a statement.

This comes as state health officials announced 6,980 new cases and an additional 35 coronavirus-related deaths, making Sunday the fifth consecutive day Illinois’ daily caseload has topped 6,000 — a number that far exceeds anything seen in the state’s previous COVID-19 peak in May.

The new infections, which account for nearly 8.9% of the 78,458 tests that have been processed statewide in the last day, raised the seven-day average positivity rate from 7.5% Saturday to 8% Sunday — up from 3.5% at the start of last month.

Illinois hospitals are treating the most coronavirus patients they’ve seen since the end of May. As of Saturday night, 3,294 people were hospitalized in Illinois with COVID-19, with 692 of those patients in intensive care units and 284 on ventilators, officials said.

Illinois health authorities reported 6,516 confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, marking the fourth-highest total reported on a single day in the state since the start of the pandemic.

The Illinois Department of Public Health also reported that 68 more people have died, bringing the statewide toll to 9,878.

The state has reported a total of 430,018 COVID-19 cases since March.

Pritzker, a Democrat, said further spread of the virus will put too much pressure on Illinois hospitals and could mean healthcare providers don't have space to treat patients who need help.

"That is why people all across the state need to stand up and make sure that they're doing everything they can locally ... to enforce the rules here so that we don’t end up with a terrible nightmare of a healthcare situation and people dying because they can’t even get treated in their local hospital," Pritzker said.

Illinois could be on the verge of having to shut down again as state public health officials reported 15,415 new COVID-19 confirmed and probable cases, a one-day record, and 27 deaths Friday.

The total number of cases in Illinois now stands at 551,957, with a total of 10,504 deaths.

As of Thursday night, 5,362 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19, with 990 in the ICU and 488 patients on ventilators.

Illinois has the highest number of COVID-related hospitalizations during the pandemic, and beds are filling up. Suburban Cook, Kane and DuPage counties now have 19% of their non-ICU beds available, below the critical 20% threshold, which is seen as a red light.

In Will and Kankakee counties, just 12% of ICU beds are open.

"We are seeing capacity decrease everywhere," said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. "100%, 200%, 300% increases depending on where you are, so everybody's capacity is being threatened."

Gov. JB Pritzker warned that Illinois could be on the verge of having to shut down again as state public health officials reported 11,028 new COVID-19 confirmed and probable cases, and 166 deaths Saturday.

The average of hospitalizations for the last seven days is 4,933. That's the highest on record - the previous highest having been 4,817 on May 3rd.

Governor JB Pritzker said Saturday that the surge is leading to a shortage of ICU beds statewide.

Doctor Kalisha Hill, the chief medical officer at Amita Health St. Mary's, said they are preparing to expand their COVID-19 units.

According to new data just released by the Illinois Department of Public Health, in the past week, there has been an average of nearly 5,000 COVID-19 patients in hospital beds across the state. The highest average on record.

In Region 7, which includes Will and Kankakee counties, there are only 23 ICU beds available.

The total number of cases in Illinois now stands at 562,985, with a total of 10,670 deaths.

Officials reported 140 additional deaths of people with COVID-19, raising the state-reported death toll to 11,014 over the course of the pandemic.

Officials also reported 8,922 newly diagnosed and probable coronavirus cases, the first time the daily statewide case tally has dipped below 10,000 since Nov. 5. That sent the statewide known and probable case count past 600,000, with 606,771 cases reported throughout the course of the pandemic.
