Trump administration ‘lied’ about vaccine surplus

Gov. Jared Polis said during a news conference Friday he’s “extremely disappointed that we were lied to” after the Trump administration promised to deliver a surplus of vaccines that doesn’t exist.

The governor was told Friday morning that the federal government couldn’t deliver on its promise, made in the waning days of the Trump administration, to hand states more vaccines by quickly doling out inoculations instead of holding them for second doses.

Asked whether the vaccine delivery disappointment was the result of political “vengeance,” Polis noted that all other states won’t receive the surplus either.

“My guess is it’s gross incompetence,” he said of the outgoing administration."

Oregon's Democratic governor slammed the Trump administration's vaccine initiative on Friday for making apparently false comments about how many COVID-19 shots would be available.

Gov. Kate Brown accused Operation Warp Speed of "deception on a national scale" in a tweet, following reports that there are no extra vaccine doses to give out, contradicting a recent policy change touted by top government officials.

“It has become abundantly clear that not only has the Trump administration botched the rollout of the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, but also that the American people have been misled about these delays,” the governors said. “Pfizer just announced that as of yesterday, they have millions of doses of the vaccine on hand and are waiting on addresses from the Trump administration so they can deliver the vaccine to states. If you are unable or unwilling to give us that supply, we urge you to grant permission for us to directly purchase vaccines so we may distribute them to the people of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota as quickly as possible. Without additional supply or authorization to purchase directly, our states may be forced to cancel plans for public vaccination clinics in the coming weeks, which are expected to vaccinate tens of thousands. It’s time for the Trump administration to do the right thing and help us end this pandemic.”

"They were lying," Gov. Walz says about federal COVID-19 vaccine stockpile

Walz said the federal government has been deceiving state officials when they claimed they were holding back second doses of the vaccine in a stockpile until they were needed.

“For months, we've planned on that and they told us that. I and my team spent 100 of hours doing that. We sent a letter this week and said don't hold them back, release them. They said ok. They were lying. They don't have any doses held back. There is no strategic supply for the second doses,” said Walz.

Governor Evers criticizes Trump Administration for slow vaccine rollout and accuses them of lying

State leaders acknowledged on Friday they’ve fallen below their goals for vaccinations.

Governor Tony Evers said the Trump administration bears the responsibility.

“It was a slap in the face to the people of Wisconsin, and frankly, I have no idea why they made that claim when they knew it wasn’t accurate,” Governor Evers said during a Wisconsin Department of Health Services media briefing.

Just this week, Governor Evers said Vice President Mike Pence and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told him Wisconsin would soon get the reserve doses.

“I guess they may have been telling the truth because it’s zero,” he said.
