OHIO remains in a state of emergency, announces new retail mask order

Unread post by AHE »

The address comes as Ohio continues to set new records for cases and hospitalizations in the state.

“We are now at the most crucial phase of this pandemic,” said DeWine.

The governor says the surge we are seeing now is much more intense, widespread and dangerous than the others we’ve seen before.

Governor DeWine says today the question is whether or not we have enough people in our hospitals instead of enough PPE. He says if we don’t change this we won’t be able to provide appropriate care for Ohioans who need it

The governor said we still have opportunities. He said we have to get back to basics, wear a mask, and wash hands. He says we need to not have parties, and to practice social distancing.

Each business will be required to post a Face Covering Requirement sign at all public entrances to the store.

Each store will be responsible for ensuring that customers and employees are wearing masks.

A new Retail Compliance Unit, comprised of agents led by the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, will inspect to ensure compliance.

Thursday marked another record-breaking day for coronavirus cases in Ohio — 7,101 — with a near-record 268 COVID-related hospitalizations.

The issue going forward isn't beds or ventilators that can be added, it's the nurses and doctors. In the spring, Ohio sent health care workers to other states, but if we needed the favor returned, they're not in a position to do so.

All of this continues to take a financial toll on Ohio hospitals as well, Palmer said. “Hospitals are still losing about $6 million a day. e're over about $4 billion in losses from this pandemic, but we have received some CARES Act funding, which has helped offset those losses.”

Ohio's exploding coronavirus pandemic accelerated Friday with a record 8,071 new cases — nearly 1,000 more than Thursday — to perhaps foreshadow the closing of restaurants, bars and gyms.

The state also reported an above-average 298 hospitalizations and 42 more deaths, nearly twice the average, on Friday.

The additional deaths raised the pandemic's toll to 5,700 as total cases climbed to 282,528 amid ongoing national records for daily cases.

Total virus patients in hospitals ticked down slightly to 2,981 on Friday, below Thursday's record of 3,031. A record 347 patients were on ventilators to assist their breathing among the 735 in intensive-care units.

The positivity rate on tests remained high at 12.9% on the latest available day (Wednesday). The seven-day average positivity rate rose to 11.2%, a figure not seen since early in the outbreak. That number stood at 2.7% about seven weeks ago.

In a Friday afternoon tweet, DeWine wrote: "We are facing a monumental crisis in Ohio. … It is up to everyone to slow this virus down. Protect your family and friends. Wear a mask."

New infections among students totaled 1,627 statewide in the latest reported week, an increase of 549 or 51% from the previous week. Reported virus infections among teachers and staff members increased by 327 or 43% statewide in the latest reported week to a cumulative total of 3,620.

As of Tuesday, Nov. 17, a total of 312,443 (+7,079) cases have been reported in Ohio since the pandemic began, leading to 5,772 (+30) deaths and 22,846 (+368) hospitalizations. The number of new cases has been above 5,500 every day since Nov. 10

The retail mask mandate requires all customers and employees of retail establishments to wear a mask, and businesses can be penalized if they don’t comply.

“Our goal is to protect the workers in the retail establishments, and also to protect the customers when they go in,” DeWine said.

Ohio reported 11,885 new cases Monday, a number that's likely inflated because of a two-day backlog of reporting from multiple labs, including two larger ones in the Cleveland Clinic and Mercy Health, said Gov. Mike DeWine. Ohio's previous record for new cases reported in a single day was 8,808 set Friday, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

DeWine described COVID-19 as a "fast runaway freight train."

An additional 282 Ohioans were hospitalized with COVID-19 Monday. The new hospitalizations were higher than the three-week average of 253 reported per day, according to the state.

Admissions to intensive-care units increased by 36 Monday, which is more than the three-week average of 26 per day, state data shows.

As of Monday, 4,358 Ohioans remained hospitalized with COVID-19, including 1,079 in ICUs and 573 on ventilators, state data shows. Just over 75% of ICU beds were filled across Ohio on Monday.

"These shortages on our workforce cannot be overstated … this issue around burnout is very real," Lofgren said. "The workforce is exhausted. The exhaustion is actually palpable."

On Monday, Ohio reported another 24 COVID-19 deaths, which is less than the three-week average of 35 new deaths reported per day. So far, the virus has killed 6,020 Ohioans, according to the state.

Ohio posted a record 156 daily deaths and 10,835 new coronavirus cases — the second-highest of the pandemic — on Wednesday as its November blitz of infections continued without pause.

The new daily record deaths added to November’s COVID-19 toll as the pandemic’s deadliest month since the record month of May.

Added to the 98 deaths on Tuesday — the second-highest daily total — Wednesday’s 156 deaths brought this month’s total to 973, an increase of 476 nearly double the 497 virus fatalities reported during October.

Health officials also reported 417 new hospitalizations — another daily record — as medical centers continue to fill with patients numbering 4,541 on Wednesday, with nearly a fourth in intensive-care units.

Hospitalizations have more than doubled in the past three weeks.

7,835 new infections and 123 additional COVID-19 deaths were reported on Wednesday.

Amid worries that hospitals are beginning to be overwhelmed by increasing numbers of virus patients, the state also reported 436 new hospitalizations on Wednesday

A total of 5,208 patients, a drop of 18 from Tuesday's record, now are hospitalized, with . nearly a fourth of virus patients admitted to intensive-care units. One of every four inpatients are being treated for COVID-19

"The state has seen record levels of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations in the past week, and all Ohioans can help to limit the spread and impact of this virus. This includes recommendations to stay at home except for necessary trips for supplies, consistent mask-wearing when around others, and frequent hand washing. Together we can help stop the spread of COVID-19," the state said in its travel advisory.

Ohio now has recorded 437,928 virus cases while the death toll has climbed to 6,671 since March 9, when the first reported cases surfaced in the state.

Ohio is on an early pace to double the number of COVID-19 deaths it had for the entire month of November, according to figures released by the Ohio Department of Health.

The agency on Saturday reported 64 more deaths, bringing the total deaths to 517 Ohioans for the first five days of December. The total deaths for all of November — the second-deadliest month of the pandemic — was 817. May was the state's deadliest month with 1,180 reported deaths.

Saturday's total number of new COVID-19 cases was 10,469, which is the second-highest number on record.

One in four patients in Ohio hospitals has COVID-19 compared with one in 22 patients 60 days ago, according to the Ohio Hospital Association.

Still, overall hospitalizations for the virus were down slightly from 5,092 Friday to 4,978 on Saturday.

State health officials reported an above-average 10,094 confirmed and probable daily virus infections and 84 additional deaths on Wednesday.

The 304,415 infections recorded in roughly six weeks since Nov. 1 account for 59% of the more-than 520,000 cases recorded during the pandemic, which hit the nine-month mark in Ohio on Wednesday.

After November began with 3,303 cases, Ohio since has recorded an average of 7,806 new daily infections, with case counts topping 10,000 on six days. A one-day record of 11,728 confirmed cases was recorded on Tuesday.

COVID-19 deaths also are spiking to a potential record, with December fatalities totaling 758 — an average of 84 each day — after adding Wednesday's deaths of the same figure. December's death toll already is higher than all but three months of the pandemic.

If that deadly pace continues the rest of the month, Ohio will mark slightly more than 2,600 deaths in December, more than double the 1,180 reported in May, the state's deadliest month. Ohio now has recorded a total of 7,187 virus deaths.

With 464 more admissions Wednesday, Ohio hospitals now contain 5,198 patients ill with the virus — less than 40 off the all-time high on Dec. 1 — representing an increase of 31% over the past three weeks. A record 747 seriously ill COVID patients were hooked up to ventilators Wednesday.
