COVID-19 cases in MINNESOTA rise, hospitals fill

Unread post by AHE »

New coronavirus cases in Minnesota surpassed 4,000 for the third straight day on Tuesday, following a record-breaking surge on Sunday with more than 5,900 new daily infections, according to state health department data.

The seven-day average for hospitalizations has risen nearly 142% over the past month. With 1,000 patients hospitalized Monday and 92% of ICU beds full, Gov. Tim Walz requested federal aid to support hospitals and long-term health facilities experiencing shortages, according to an internal Health and Human Services memo obtained by ABC News.

Hospitals in the Twin Cities are now declining patient transfers from neighboring states like North Dakota and Iowa, according to the HHS memo.

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed to ABC News last month that at least 23 coronavirus cases had been linked to three in-state Trump campaign events in September.

Walz announced on Tuesday that the state would implement new restrictions, including mandating that bars and restaurants close at 10 p.m, and limiting indoor and outdoor private social gatherings to 10 people. Additional restrictions, like limited funerals and weddings to 50 people, will be phased in in the coming weeks.

The continuing surge in Minnesota's COVID-19 numbers — a record 7,228 cases were reported Thursday — has increasingly anxious health officials scrambling to find a way to slow the coronavirus as Thanksgiving approaches.

Thursday's numbers included 39 deaths — the second-highest one-day total so far.

"What the data are telling us is that every Minnesotan needs to take every measure possible to limit the spread of this disease. That means following the governor's executive orders, limiting social gatherings outside your immediate household, wear a mask in public and social distance when you do go out."

A record 1,329 COVID-19 patients are filling Minnesota hospital beds — 278 in intensive care and 1,051 in non-ICU hospital beds. Officials said Thursday that COVID patients accounted for 292 new hospital admissions.

A spot survey conducted by the Minnesota Hospital Association on Wednesday found 6,130 hospital patient care staff were not at work — either because they've contracted COVID or are in quarantine.

Overall, 16,856 Minnesota health care workers have tested positive for the infectious disease, according to state data.

In all, 2,793 people have died of COVID-19 since mid-March; 1,921 of the total having been residents of long-term care and assisted-living facilities.

Since the pandemic began, 201,795 cases have been reported in Minnesota

Minnesota reported a record 1,424 COVID-19 hospitalizations on Friday, and an additional 46 people have died from the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus — the second highest one-day total in Minnesota.

Of the 1,424 hospitalized with COVID-19, 293 were in intensive care.

All told, 2,839 Minnesotans have died of the virus since last spring.

The Minnesota Department of Health reported Friday 5,552 new cases of COVID-19 with a total of 207,339 Minnesotans have been diagnosed with the virus since last spring.

The previous one-day record was 56 deaths reported on Wednesday.

Minnesota’s COVID-19 outbreak continues to rage unabated, with 7,559 new COVID-19 cases reported Sunday along with 31 additional deaths.

The deaths cap Minnesota’s deadliest week on record during this pandemic, with 249 deaths from the disease over the past seven days. 2,905 deaths (31 new)

The rolling seven-day averages for new COVID cases, hospital admissions and deaths in Minnesota are at all-time highs. Minnesota’s 7,559 newly reported cases compare to 5,924 last Sunday.

And that spiking case count is a signal that hospitalizations and deaths will continue to climb in the coming weeks, as those numbers lag behind positive tests.

The seven-day average death toll in Minnesota is now above 35 deaths a day, about twice as high as two weeks ago. The average number of COVID-19 hospital admissions each day is about 221.

Minnesotans, he said, can “control our destiny in this. We can choose to make those choices around masking. We can choose to believe this is real and quit playing that this is somehow not ... is like the flu or something. None of those things were true at the beginning. None of those things are true now.”

The 7,444 diagnosed infections reported on Monday brought the state's total in the pandemic to 231,018 — putting it on pace for more than 300,000 by Thanksgiving.

Twelve new COVID-19 deaths were reported Monday, bringing the state's toll to 2,917.

The state's pandemic response dashboard shows that 1,121 of 1,429 immediately available ICU beds are occupied by patients with COVID-19 or unrelated medical or surgical issues. Another 408 ICU surge beds could be readied within 72 hours if needed and if staffing were available.

Hospitals have seen a 500% increase in COVID-19 patients since mid-September and a 5% daily increase in overall inpatient activity in recent days, said Dr. Cameron Berg, medical director of the emergency department at North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale.

"We're all looking at the models and we're planning for an increase in COVID patients over the next three weeks," he said. "I'm hoping that it starts to flatten out at that point as public health measures come into effect."

Walz urged Minnesotans to continue to wear masks, practice social distancing, stay home when sick and avoid large group gatherings in order to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

COVID-19 hospitalizations grew by 111 patients overnight with 1,669 patients reportedly hospitalized Tuesday with 346 in critical condition.

The number of people needing hospital care because of COVID-19 has more than doubled this month. Current numbers are now nearly three times higher than they were in May when the state last experienced a peak of serious and critical patients.

About 77 percent of the state’s existing critical care hospital beds and 72 percent of regular hospital beds are currently occupied. State hospitals can add extra “surge capacity,” but there are concerns about having enough medical staff to care that are healthy and able to work.

The state’s outbreak shows no sign of slowing.

Minnesota added 5,945 new coronavirus infections Tuesday and 26 more fatalities were reported by the state Department of Health.

The state’s death toll is now 2,943 with another 56 fatalities suspected to have been caused by COVID-19, but the person never had a positive coronavirus test. Minnesota crossed the 2,000 fatality mark September 28.

A single-day record of 67 COVID-19 deaths was reported by Minnesota health officials on Wednesday, pushing the state's total in the pandemic above 3,000.

As cases surged this fall, the pace of COVID-19 fatalities has also quickened.

Minnesota went from 2,000 to 3,000 COVID-19 deaths in 55 days. By comparison, it took 71 days after Minnesota reported its first COVID-19 fatality on March 21 to reach its first 1,000, and then 120 days after that to reach 2,000.

Another 5,102 new COVID-19 infections were reported Wednesday, bringing the state total to 242,043 cases.

With the new one-day record for deaths — the last high of 56 was set seven days ago — Minnesota has lost 3,010 lives to the pandemic.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 also reached a single-day high — with the state's pandemic response dashboard Wednesday showing 1,706 hospital beds filled with COVID-19 patients in Minnesota.

That includes 355 patients receiving intensive care due to breathing problems or other complications from their infections. COVID-19 patients now make up 31% of the 1,153 patients in ICU beds.

Statewide, 80% of the 1,440 ICU beds are in use due to COVID-19 and other medical conditions, while 408 beds could be readied for intensive care within 72 hours if needed, depending on staff availability.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are also at record highs with more than 1,700 hospital beds filled with COVID-19 patients in Minnesota.

Bloomington-based HealthPartners said Thursday that 92% of its ICU beds were occupied, while 87% of its general medical/surgical beds are full.

Unread post by AHE »

Minnesota hit another grim COVID-19 milestone Friday, reporting a record 101 deaths, a single-day tally that shattered the previous high mark of 72 fatalities.

The state has now seen 3,476 deaths since the pandemic arrived here in March, according to the state Department of Health. The fatalities reported Friday include victims from 39 of the state's 87 counties.

The deaths were reported during a 24-hour period ending at 4 p.m.

The state's hospital capacity dashboard showed COVID and non-COVID patients using 1,147 of the state's 1,440 intensive care units beds on Thursday — slightly lower than last Friday when 1,173 ICU beds were in use. But while patients with COVID-19 occupied 197 ICU beds on Nov. 1, they occupied nearly double the beds — 386 — Thursday.
