CALIFORNIA wildfires 2020

Unread post by AHE »

In Southern California, record heat, bone dry conditions and gusty winds helped spread the Bruder Fire east of Los Angeles, which also forced evacuations. There are currently 21 wildfires burning in California, 12 of which are major.

Several record highs were reported Wednesday in the Southwest: Anaheim, California, hit 96 degrees; Ontario, California, 99 degrees; Napa, California, 94 degrees

Red flag warnings are in place from Colorado to California, while a heat advisory has been issued from the San Francisco Bay area to San Diego.

In Northern California, there is a red flag warning due to hot, dry winds that could gust near 50 mph Thursday. Near record high temperatures are also expected in the region.

A new fire weather watch has been issued for Southern California on Friday.

Powerful Santa Ana winds are expected to bring increased fire danger to much of Southern California, prompting officials to issue a red flag warning that will take effect early Monday morning.

The National Weather Service is predicting conditions will be dangerously dry and gusty late Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon, with damaging winds of 60-80 mph possible in the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Forecasters expect wind gusts of 50-65 mph in the valleys and foothill areas.

County officials also recommend signing up for emergency alerts, keeping mobile phones charged, and clearing out hazards such as dry leaves from gutters.

In Riverside County, a wind advisory for the Coachella Valley will go into effect from 2 a.m. through 11 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service said. Forecasters warned that the Coachella Valley will see westerly winds between 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

The strongest winds in that county on Sunday will be below the San Gorgonio Pass, the Weather Service said, while on Monday the strongest winds would be below the Morongo Pass.

"Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines,'' the agency said. "Widespread power outages are possible, and travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.''

The conditions caused by the strong winds, low humidity and dry fuels will be some of the most dangerous of this year, and are “uncomfortably similar” to the circumstances that led to other destructive fires including 2019’s Kincade Fire, 2018’s Camp Fire and the Wine Country Fires of 2017, according to the National Weather Service.

Some gusts could top 70 mph, said Jim Mathews, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

A large swath of northern California is under an "extreme" fire weather threat, according to the NWS. The area surrounding the extreme threat is under a "critical" threat. The remaining area has an "elevated" threat.

“Any new ignitions will be present in an environment that will promote rapid, explosive, and dangerous spread of fire,” NWS Sacramento wrote Sunday.

More than 8,600 wildfires have burned well over 6,400 square miles and destroyed about 9,200 buildings in California this year. There have been 31 deaths.

A brush fire that rapidly spread to at least 1,100 acres is threatening homes, triggering thousands of mandatory evacuations in Yorba Linda.

The Blue Ridge Fire was initially burning in the area of Green River Road near the Green River Golf course and the 91 Freeway, near Chino Hills State Park. It was initially named the Green Fire and then changed to the Blue Ridge Fire, for Blue Ridge Drive in Yorba Linda.

Fire officials say the fire may soon pose an immediate threat to residences in Yorba Linda.

Evacuation orders were issued for Yorba Linda neighborhoods north of the 91 Freeway, east of Gypsum Canyon including Bryant Ranch Elementary school, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The Hidden Hills neighborhood of Yorba Linda was also added to the evacuations.

"Anyone in the affected area should evacuate immediately," the OCSD tweeted.

The sheriff's department estimated about 4,000 properties, with 10,000 people, were evacuated in Yorba Linda.

Two firefighters suffered critical injuries Monday as they battled a fast-growing wildfire in Southern California.

The men suffered second- and third-degree burns while battling the Silverado Fire near Irvine, Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy told reporters.

The fire almost quadrupled in size later in the day, according to the fire authority, growing to 7,200 acres with no containment.

The fire is being driven by strong, erratic winds estimated to be about 20-30 miles per hour, with gusts of 60-70 mph.
The inferno began as a vegetation fire at about 6:47 a.m. local time Monday in the area of Santiago Canyon Road and Silverado Canyon Road, according to the city of Irvine.

The city of Irvine issued an immediate evacuation order for about 60,000 residents as the fire rapidly spread.

"The fire started in Silverado Canyon, and helicopters and fixed wing aircraft are on the way," Mayor Christina Shea said in a news release. "The wind is making it move very quickly."

National Weather Service said the winds in LA and Ventura counties could bring gusts up to 80 mph in the mountain areas and warned of possible power outages, fire conditions and possible delays at local airports.

Utility Southern California Edison implemented a public safety power shutoff (PSPS) at 7:30 a.m. Monday to 3,677 customers in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties.

A pair of wind-driven wildfires actively burning in Orange County and a couple of nearly extinguished blazes in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties have spawned the worst air quality in the nation

Tuesday, the South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a windblown dust and ash advisory in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, warning that hazardous particulate matter from recent wildfires may be spread by strong gusts of wind.

sand, dust and ash are being carried from the scars of past blazes, including the Bobcat fire and the El Dorado fire.

SILVERADO FIRE

The smoky fire exploded in size to 7,200 acres after breaking out at 6:47 a.m. Monday in the area of Santiago Canyon Road and Silverado Canyon Road. Strong gusts pushed flames along brushy ridges in Silverado Canyon and near houses in the sprawling city of Irvine, home to about 280,000 residents. There was no containment.

More than 70,000 Orange County residents have been ordered to evacuate their homes

BLUE RIDGE FIRE

A wind-driven brush fire on the west end of Corona quickly consumed at least 8,000 acres and spread into Orange County, threatening homes in Yorba Linda. The fire, initially called the "Green Fire," erupted at 12:55 p.m. Monday in the area of Green River Road near the Green River Golf course and the 91 Freeway, near Chino Hills State Park. Mandatory evacuations were also issued for parts of Chino Hills and Brea.
