Los Angeles County hit another disturbing milestone Tuesday, exceeding 11,000 COVID-19 deaths.

The county has reported nearly 1,300 deaths since Dec. 30, according to health officials, including 237 on Tuesday, according to data compiled by The Times.

Over the past week, Los Angeles County averaged 183 COVID-19 deaths a day — the equivalent of one every eight minutes — and 13,500 new coronavirus infections a day, a count expected to grow with the reopening of testing sites after the holidays. The county’s cumulative case count now tops 841,000.

In L.A. County, there were 8,023 hospitalized COVID-19 patients Monday — 125 more than the previous day. Of them, 1,642 were in the ICU, also a record.

In addition, health officials announced 11,841 new cases of coronavirus today.

Right now, 8,023 COVID-19 patients are receiving hospital care in L.A. County — a number that has dropped slightly for the first time in several days.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County hit 852,165.

The astronomical coronavirus surge in Los Angeles has infected thousands of healthcare workers in recent weeks and exacerbated the strain on hospitals struggling to care for critically ill patients.

More than 2,200 people who work at hospitals in L.A. County tested positive for the virus in December alone, constituting roughly a third of all hospital infections reported during the pandemic.

Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, said that adequately staffing his hospital — where the ICU is stretched to 150% of its normal capacity — is a constant challenge, with staffers out because they are ill with COVID-19 or quarantining due to exposure.

The number of people dying of Covid-19 in Los Angeles County in a day is now equivalent to the number of homicide deaths the city saw in an entire year, Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a Thursday news conference.

"Yesterday we had 259 deaths, that's one more than all the homicides in 2019 in L.A. city combined," he said. "In a single day, equal to a year of homicides."

Los Angeles County officials now say one person dies of Covid-19 every eight minutes.

More than 8,000 people are hospitalized with the virus across Los Angeles County, 20% of whom are in intensive care units.

With 288 deaths reported Tuesday, the countywide death toll rose to 12,674.

According to the county Department of Public Health, more than 1,600 people died from the virus in the county over the past seven days, an average of about 230 per day. That equates to one death roughly every six minutes.

The county reported another 11,994 COVID-19 infections Tuesday, lifting the countywide total since the pandemic began to 944,319. Health officials said Monday that average of 10 people test positive for the virus every minute in the county.

Bed space remains at a premium in Los Angeles County hospitals, where the Department of Health Services on Tuesday reported about 700 available beds, including just 33 adult intensive-care unit beds.

According to the state, there were 7,949 people hospitalized with the coronavirus in the county, a slight increase from Monday. Those patients include 1,725 people in ICUs.

The county has a licensed capacity of about 2,500 ICU beds.

COVID-19 deaths continued to mount in Los Angeles County Wednesday, with more than 250 fatalities reported, but while new cases numbers, positivity rates and hospitalization figures are trending downward, the public health director said it's too early to proclaim the surge over.

Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said the county's seven-day average of daily deaths was 179 on Jan. 10, dropping to 174 on Jan. 12. But on Wednesday, she reported 262 deaths. With 27 more deaths reported by Long Beach and five by Pasadena, the countywide death toll from throughout the pandemic rose to 14,416.

Ferrer reported 6,492 new cases on Wednesday, the lowest total in weeks, although she said the number may be low due to reporting lags and lack of testing availability over the holiday weekend.

As of Wednesday, there were 7,263 people hospitalized in the county, according to state figures, including 1,692 in intensive care.

The 6,492 new cases reported Wednesday, along with 593 announced by Long Beach and 53 by Pasadena, increased the cumulative countywide total from throughout the pandemic to 1,038,738.

Los Angeles County residents won’t be fully inoculated against COVID-19 until next year unless the supply of vaccines gets a major boost, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti said this week.

Garcetti said, when you account for “the 7.5 million of the 10 million people that the Department of Public Health at the county level expects to get a vaccination,” you wind up with an overall need for 15 million doses.

By comparison, Garcetti said, the county has been receiving an average of about 160,000 doses a week.

The average number of Latino residents dying from coronavirus each day in Los Angeles county has increased by more than 1,000% since November, according to county public health officials.

In November, the average number of Latino residents in LA county dying from Covid-19 each day stood at 3.5 per 100,000 residents. Now, it is 40 deaths per 100,000 residents. “That’s an increase of over 1,000%,” said Barbara Ferrer, the county public health director at a briefing this week.

As of this week, 231 Latinos died per 100,000 people in Los Angeles county, according to county data, as compared to 82 white people per 100,000.

“We are an embarrassment to industrialized societies in our ability to get Covid-19 under control,” Diaz said. “As a result, Californians of color are getting sick and dying and having a difficult time recovering at the same time millions of Californians are requiring them to put their bodies on the line.”
