“I think that we can say that we are pretty close to 100% of capacity and it’s varying from day to day.”

The average hospitalized COVID-19 patient continues to be in the 45 to 64 age group. About 2⁄3 of patients require treatment in a nonintensive care setting, while the other third require more intensive care, Vinik said.

“And in terms of prevention, it’s really now needing to shift to a major push among our community members to mask up and to social distance, among those groups that we tend to be more familiar with that we tend to let our guard down, because that’s actually where we’re seeing a lot of this transmission,” Webb said.

On Sunday, Utah reported 254 current hospitalizations — the highest number since the Utah Department of Health began releasing current hospitalizations in addition to cumulative hospitalizations in May.

We’re seeing an unprecedented volume of hospitalizations and our COVID units are filling up, and we’re monitoring that really carefully because we’re getting close to filling up,” Webb said.

“What we’re seeing now is that across the board and across the state our hospitals are full taking care of the breadth of health conditions that people need hospital care for,” he said.

Utah on Tuesday unveiled new plans to increase its coronavirus restrictions on Tuesday as the state experiences an increase of coronavirus cases.

regardless of a county’s rating, masks would be required at all public gatherings, such as sporting events, weddings, concerts and movie theaters. The state is also encouraging local governments to create their own mandates on masks.

In addition, people living in high and moderate transmission areas will have to limit casual social gatherings to 10 people or fewer for two weeks, beginning Thursday.

Herbert said the state’s new case count hovers around 1,000 per day, and its percent positivity rate is now over 13 percent.

As of Wednesday, there were 88,963 total COVID-19 cases in the state and 527 deaths, according to data from the Utah Health Department.

What took you so long?
The one thing you need to know — the easy-to-understand bumper sticker statement — is that everyone in Utah should wear a mask, period. Call it a mandate or a requirement, it doesn’t matter. That was the important takeaway on Tuesday. Masks will be worn everywhere in Utah.

The science journal Nature published a long report this month about the value of cloth masks. While a wide range of studies may seem confusing when you get into the weeds of how well they stop microscopic particles, one scientist, Jeremy Howard of the University of San Francisco, said, “You don’t have to do much math to say this is obviously a good idea.”

Or, as Rich Saunders, acting director of the Utah Department of Health, said at that press conference on Tuesday, “... if you take the politics out and you look at the science, masks just work. They’re not the save-all, they don’t do everything we need, but they work.”

The day after the Utah press conference, the state recorded 1,114 new cases and five more deaths. That’s a one-day figure more than one-fifth of all of Japan’s active cases.

Utah's number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 1,496 on Friday as the state continues experiencing what Gov. Gary Herbert earlier this week said is "one of the worst outbreaks in the country."

Eight more deaths were also reported Friday, according to the Utah Department of Health.

It's the second day in a row Utah has added nearly 1,500 new cases as the disease continues surging.

Utah also sets a record Friday for current COVID-19 hospitalizations. There are 290 people hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Friday, surpassing the previous record of 259 current hospitalizations set on Tuesday, state data shows.

"The spike in cases we have seen in recent weeks is unsustainable," Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said in a statement Friday.

The state now estimates there are 23,328 active cases of the disease in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 1,224, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 13.9%.

Of the 290 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah Friday, 96 are in intensive care units. About 75% of all ICU beds are occupied Friday, while about 57% of non-ICU beds are filled, state data shows.

"Utahns must wear a mask around others, socially distance, and limit social gathering sizes. Unless we do these things, we can expect to see more sobering days like today," Herbert said. "This is vital to ensure our health care system is not overwhelmed treating patients who contract COVID-19."

The number of Utahns currently hospitalized with COVID-19 reached a new record of nearly 300 on Saturday, and University of Utah Health officials are warning that the hospital system is already surpassing its capacity.

On Friday, the health care system’s intensive care units were 104% full, said Dr. Russell Vinik, University of Utah Health chief medical operations officer. On Wednesday, U. Health officials had opened up a “surge ICU” to handle extra patients, he said.

On Saturday, current hospitalizations statewide reached 298 — the highest number since the start of the pandemic. Saturday also marked another big day for new coronavirus cases as Utah health officials reported an increase of 1,340 cases of COVID-19 and three more deaths.

The rolling seven-day average for positive tests is now 1,222 per day while the rolling seven-day average for percent of positive laboratory tests is 14%.

The deaths reported Saturday bring the state’s toll to 540

For a fifth consecutive day, Utah has experienced a daily increase of at least 1,000 new coronavirus cases — a troubling trend that’s now occurred three times in the month of October. Three more Utahns have died and 1,097 more people have tested positive for COVID-19, the Utah Department of Health announced Sunday.

Utah’s medical leaders are warning that they have few intensive care unit beds left.

With Sunday’s reported numbers, the state is now up to 94,394 positive cases overall and 543 total deaths.

Current hospitalizations declined slightly — from a record 298 on Saturday down to 291. Total hospitalizations from the beginning of the outbreak now stand at 4,656.

On Saturday, another worrisome record was broken, as health officials reported 298 patients receiving active care.

a second Utah hospital has filled its intensive care unit, forcing it to open — and staff — overflow beds.

Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George filled its intensive care unit beds on Sunday, when southwest Utah reported its highest-yet number of hospitalizations during one week.

It is Utah’s second hospital to fill its ICU beds; University of Utah Hospital on Friday also exceeded its normal ICU capacity and opened an overflow unit, requiring doctors and nurses to work overtime.

With 1,168 new coronavirus cases reported Monday, Utah for the past week has averaged 1,233 new positive test results a day — a new record high, the Utah Department of Health reported Monday.

In the past two weeks, 669 Utahns have been hospitalized for COVID-19, with 288 Utah patients concurrently admitted, UDOH reported. On average, 276 patients have been receiving treatment in Utah hospitals each day for the past week — the highest weeklong average yet.

4,688 patients have been hospitalized in Utah for COVID-19, up 32 from Sunday.

Utah’s death toll from the coronavirus stood at 546 on Monday

Asked on CNN what Utah health care providers need, Miller said, “We have currently enough equipment, what we really need is the public to pick up their ears a little bit and wear their masks.

Utah's number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 1,363 on Wednesday, with six more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

The state also records a record number of current hospitalizations, with 314 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah as of Wednesday, according to the health department. Wednesday is the first day that Utah has reported over 300 current hospitalizations since the pandemic began.

The state now estimates there are 24,843 active cases of the disease in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 1,283, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 15.1%.

Utah's number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 1,543 on Thursday — another new single-day record for new cases.

Six deaths also were reported Thursday, according to the Utah Department of Health.

"I don't know what to do anymore," health department state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn said at a Thursday news conference. "I'm really not trying to scare anyone, I'm just trying to inform you."

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 1,288, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 15.5%.

Infections are at an all-time high in Utah just as the state moves into winter, where people will be gathering more in indoor places that have poor ventilation, he said. On top of that, flu season is approaching, which typically stresses healthcare systems even in a normal year, he added. All these things will drive more infections, Stenehjem said.

"For the first time as a physician, I'm scared to see what's to come," he said at the news conference. "It's hard to look forward to the future. Our morale is low.

The state now estimates there are 25,400 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. The new numbers indicate a 1.6% increase in positive cases since Wednesday.

There are now 301 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Utah, including 110 in intensive care units across the state. About 74% of all ICU beds in Utah are occupied as of Thursday, while about 53% of non-ICU beds are filled, state data shows.

Utah's number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 1,960 on Friday — the second day in a row the state has reported a record-high number of new cases in a single day.

Four deaths were also reported Friday, according to the Utah Department of Health. Friday's case counts update obliterates Thursday's previous record by over 400 cases. On Thursday, 1,543 new infections were reported as Utah officials held a COVID-19 news conference in which they appeared defeated, deflated and scared of what's to come.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert continued that tone in a Friday statement.

"This is a record day for Utah — but not a good one. Cases of COVID-19 are at an all-time high, and I am deeply concerned that COVID exhaustion is as well," Herbert said in a news release. "Now is not the time to let down your guard. By public health order, masks are required in 21 counties. Wear one any time you are around someone outside your immediate household, even when around extended family or friends."

The state now estimates there are 26,254 active cases of the disease in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 1,355, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 15.8%.

There are now 313 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah as the state's health care systems continue being stretched by the pandemic. Of those, 109 patients are in intensive care unit beds. About 76% of all ICU beds in Utah are filled as of Friday — the highest percentage of the pandemic. About 56% of non-ICU beds are filled, state data shows.

Utah continues its sharp surge in coronavirus infections with another day of elevated positive tests for COVID-19.

After back-to-back record days, 1,608 new infections were reported Saturday by the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) as critical-care beds continued to fill with people falling ill and struggling to breathe.

Utah’s skyrocketing infection rates mirror national trends, especially in the Intermountain West and Upper Midwest, where the disease appears to be spreading out of control with the arrival of cold weather and ongoing resistance to mask wearing, social distancing and other measures experts say slow the spread of the virus.

The past three days have been the three highest case count days Utah has experienced since the start of the pandemic. Friday’s count of 1,960 was the worst and Saturday’s was the second worst.

Utah deaths from the coronavirus rose to 568 on Saturday, with one reported since Friday.

Hospitalizations dipped slightly Saturday, with 310 Utah patients currently admitted, UDOH reported. Since the pandemic arrived in Utah, 103,117 people have tested positive, and 4,997 Utahns have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

Gov. Gary Herbert has urged Utahns repeatedly to wear masks, practice hand hygiene and engage in social distancing, but he has been hesitant to impose a mask order statewide, which he has said would be difficult to enforce and could be resisted as an imposed government mandate.

Utah health officials on Sunday reported another 1,765 COVID-19 cases — the state’s second-highest daily case count

The new cases were confirmed out of 8,702 tests, with a 20.3% positive rate, according to the Utah Department of Health. The rolling seven-day average for new cases is 1,490 per day, and the average positive test rate is 16.6%.

On Friday, the state confirmed just under 2,000 cases — the record since the start of the pandemic. Saturday brought the previous second-highest daily case count, with just over 1,600.

The makeshift hospital at the Mountain America Expo Center remains an option for treating COVID-19 patients, Bell said, “but we have more beds than we have skilled medical teams to deal with them in our hospitals

People must get serious about wearing masks and social distancing. If this threat continues, then people will start withdrawing from restaurants and bars and gyms and public places. People are so worried about government imposing a lock down, but at some point, the disease is bad enough that people start to lock themselves down,” Bell said

308 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Utah — 120 of whom are in intensive care units, which are 76.1% full overall. On Saturday, 310 patients were hospitalized with the virus throughout the state.

Statewide hospitalizations for the coronavirus were holding steady at just under 300 patients Monday, the Utah Department of Health reported, with 1,201 new cases diagnosed.

Utah’s death toll from the coronavirus stood at 574 on Monday

Hospitals reported 299 Utah patients were concurrently admitted, UDOH reported. On average, 305 patients have been receiving treatment in Utah hospitals each day for the past week, continuing a three-week streak of new record highs each day.

In total, 5,102 patients have been hospitalized in Utah for COVID-19, up 53 from Sunday. In the past two weeks, 771 Utahns have been reported hospitalized for the coronavirus — the highest number of any 14-day stretch since the pandemic began.

Utah’s intensive care units were 68.9% occupied as of Monday, as state officials and hospital administrators prepared to begin rationing ICU space at some point this week or next.

Utah Public Health Association called for stricter measures to be taken to slow the spread of coronavirus as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 1,575 on Wednesday, with an additional 10 deaths from the disease.

The 10 COVID-19 deaths match the highest death total reported by the Utah Department of Health in a single day. That brings Utah to 108,803 total COVID-19 cases and 588 deaths reported by the department since the pandemic began.

The health department says that 299 Utahns are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 117 of the patients are reported to be in intensive care. The state is currently using about 70% of its ICU beds for various types of patients.

Over the past week, the state is averaging 1,549 new cases per day and a positive test percentage of 17.9.

Utah's number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 1,837 on Thursday, with 10 more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

This is the second day in a row Utah has reported 10 deaths, which matches the highest death total reported by the Utah Department of Health in a single day.

Thursday's totals give Utah 110,640 total confirmed cases, with 317 total hospitalizations and 598 total deaths from the disease.

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 1,578, according to Utah Department of Health state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 18.1%.

Of the 1,063,291 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 9.67% have tested positive for the disease.

Health officials gave a dire warning that hospitals will likely have to transition to crisis standards of care within seven to 10 days, based on the current caseload in Utah.

There are 317 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Utah, including 123 in intensive care units across the state. About 69% of all ICU beds in Utah are occupied as of Thursday, while about 55% of non-ICU beds are filled, state data shows.

The press conference Thursday morning was filled with warnings that hospitals will likely have to transition to crisis standards of care within two weeks.

While hospitals are being overrun with COVID-19 patients, a person who has a heart attack, for example, won't be able to get the same standard of care as normal, Saunders said.

"We cannot continue to argue about masking. We cannot continue to argue about whether this pandemic is real or made up," Shah said. And we cannot continue to argue that healthcare will do just fine regardless of the demand. That is not true."

the state health department is reporting an additional 2,292 test-confirmed cases and three new deaths from the disease.

That sets a new Utah record for new cases reported in a single day by more than 300 cases; the previous high was set one week ago.

The continued rise in cases prompted the state to issue an emergency alert to cellphones Friday afternoon warning Utahns that local hospitals are "nearly overwhelmed."

Friday numbers bring Utah to 112,932 confirmed cases and 601 deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

The health department reported Friday that 318 Utahns are currently hospitalized due to the coronavirus and that 5,395 total Utahns have been hospitalized for it overall. Of those hospitalizations, 133 are reported to be in intensive care, contributing to the 72% of state ICU beds currently in use.

Over the past week, the state is averaging 1,622 new cases reported per day and a positive test percentage of 18.2.

Utah Department of Health is reporting 1,854 new test-confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 10 new deaths from the disease.

Currently, 342 Utahns are reported to be hospitalized due to COVID-19. The update brings Utah to 116,510 total confirmed cases, 614 deaths and 5,526 hospitalizations since the pandemic began.

Over the past week, the state is averaging 1,644 new reported cases per day and a positive test percentage of 18.7. Sunday marks the first time Utah has had 30,000 simultaneous active cases of COVID-19

The capacity at many Utah hospitals is already strained, and further increases could force the state to implement its crisis standards of care guidelines.

"Us, from the health care, pleading to the public to say 'Look at our ICU, look at our hospitals, look at these suffering patients' has not worked.

"Look at how much national attention we've gotten," Stenehjem continued. "This week we were on ABC, PBS, NBC, CNN — all national news outlets — pointing to Utah as like 'what the hell is happening there? Look at their case counts. What are you going to do?' And yet we haven't seen anything necessarily change."

That said, the number of active COVID-19 cases are at an all-time high. Utah reached the estimated 30,000 active cases plateau for the first time over the weekend.

The state also has a running seven-day average of 1,646.9 new cases per day, which is a smidge below the current record set over the weekend. The seven-day running average of test positivity rate is now at an all-time high of 19% through Oct. 27 — about 12.5 percentage points above the national average, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Utah's hospitalization levels due to COVID-19 are on the rise. There were 348 active COVID-19 hospitalizations on Sunday, which is the highest the state health department has recorded. Of those, 138 cases involved intensive care unit beds.

Total bed occupation remains at 50%, but health officials said last month that bed space still doesn't account for staff required to handle increases in patients. The state's total ICU beds occupied was 72% on Sunday, which is around the target goal maximum set by the state's Unified Response.

Stenehjem said hospitalization occupancy is up 130% from where it was at the end of October 2019.

Utah County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Spencer Cannon told NBC affiliate KSL that the number of people who attended the Saturday night party ranged "anywhere from three to ten thousand people"

The event took place at an area known as "The Knolls," located on the barren western shore of Utah Lake, opposite the city of Provo.

A spokesperson for Utah Governor Gary Herbert said in statement that Covid-19 is mainly spread through social gatherings, and that the virus "is all too real and terrifying for the medical professionals working overtime in our packed ICUs."

"We must decide, and show by our actions, that the lives of everyone around us matter more to us than parties. If we do not, we will have a difficult time beating COVID-19 as a society," the statement said.

Coronavirus hospitalizations blew past previous record highs on Tuesday, with 366 Utahns currently hospitalized and 1,669 new diagnoses statewide.

Nearly 500 Utahns have been admitted to hospitals in the past week alone — a record high. In total, 5,665 patients have been hospitalized in Utah for COVID-19, up a record 89 from the day before.

Utah’s intensive care units were 73.7% occupied as of Tuesday — a figure that hospital administrators say does not account for reduced staffing as nurses and doctors fall ill or leave the profession, or for demands on life-saving medical equipment. Utah’s hospitals have been preparing to begin rationing care in intensive care units.

Not only are new cases popping up at high rates statewide, nearly 90% of Utahns live in communities where the rate of new cases is higher now than it was a week ago.

On average, 332 patients have been receiving treatment in Utah hospitals each day for the past week, continuing a nearly month-long continuous streak of new record highs.

Utah’s death toll from the coronavirus stood at 620 on Tuesday, with six fatalities reported since Monday

Meanwhile, cases continued to spread more rapidly than ever in Utah’s schools, even though many of the state’s high schools are on modified schedules, are online only, or only returned to in-person classes a day ago after temporary closures due to COVID-19. There were nearly 1,100 new school-related cases in Utah in the past week, another new record, according to state data.

Utah reported 2,110 new coronavirus cases Wednesday, the second-highest increase since the pandemic began — and record hospitalizations for the fourth day in a row.

For the past week, the state has averaged 1,803 new positive test results a day, continuing a streak of new record highs, the Utah Department of Health reported.

Utah’s death toll from the coronavirus stood at 625 on Wednesday, with six fatalities reported since Tuesday and one previous death being removed after further investigation.

Hospitalizations continued to rise Wednesday, with a record-high 382 Utah patients concurrently admitted, UDOH reported. On average, 341 patients have been receiving treatment in Utah hospitals each day for the past week — a figure that has risen continuously for almost a month.

In total, 5,755 Utahns have been hospitalized in Utah for COVID-19, with more than 500 of those reported in the past week.

Utah's number of COVID-19 cases continued to rise Thursday with a record 2,807 new cases reported — over 500 more than the state's previous single-day record.

Seven more deaths were also reported Thursday, according to the Utah Department of Health. A total of 389 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized in Utah, another record-high number.

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 1,943, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 19.5%.

The new numbers indicate a 2.3% increase in positive cases since Wednesday.

The health department now estimates there are 33,823 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah.

Of the 389 COVID-19 patients hospitalized Thursday, 158 are in intensive care unit beds. About 78% of all ICU beds in Utah are occupied, while about 55% of non-ICU beds are filled, state data shows.

Thursday's totals give Utah 124,292 total confirmed cases, with 5,830 total hospitalizations and 632 total deaths from the disease since the pandemic began.
