There are now 45 active COVID-19 outbreaks at Colorado colleges, universities and K-12 schools.

That's according to the weekly outbreaks report distributed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). As of this writing, 60 staff members at schools across the state have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, in addition to 2,108 students.

The majority of the student cases are at CU Boulder, which has 1,527 confirmed student cases of COVID-19. That's a slight increase from last week, when the university reported 1,503 student cases.

Colorado State University in Fort Collins is a new addition to this week's outbreak list, with 375 confirmed student cases of the virus. It is the second-largest school-related outbreak in the state.

Additional new outbreaks have been reported at restaurants, grocery stores and even the Colorado Rapids professional soccer team, where 17 staff members have confirmed cases of COVID-19, CDPHE said.

More Colorado residents are in the hospital for COVID-19 than at any point since late May, as hospitalizations surged past the peak of the state’s summer spike.

As of Monday, 288 people were hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Colorado.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 4,979 cases in the week ending Sunday, which is about 900 cases more than the state saw during the single-biggest week of the July surge.

the number of deaths per week has increased since mid-September, and two weeks ago, the total was the highest it has been since the end of the summer wave.

Monday, 77% of Colorado’s 1,977 ICU beds were in use, according to state data.

Statewide, 79,037 people in Colorado have tested positive, and 7,915 have been hospitalized. Since March, 1,998 people have died directly from the virus.

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 274 active COVID-19 outbreaks at schools, restaurants, stores, churches and other facilities across the state this week, setting a new record.

As of Wednesday, there were 317 confirmed COVID-19 patients in Colorado hospitals — a 59% jump since Oct. 1 and the highest number since late May. Seventy-seven percent of the state’s available intensive care unit beds were in use Wednesday

So far in October, there have been 119 new outbreaks, averaging 11 cases and less than one death each.

Masks will now be required outdoors for anyone who is with someone not from their household and when social distancing is not possible. The new mandate went into effect Friday and will be in place through Nov. 16.

The city also reduced the number of non-related people allowed to gather in an unregulated setting from 10 to five.

The new restrictions Friday do not impact the current rules for restaurants and indoor dining

Denver public health director Bob McDonald said residents should still feel safe eating at restaurants, as long as they wear a mask to and from, taking it off while dining.

Colorado is entering dangerous new territory in its response to the pandemic, with hospitalizations and cases rising, and a narrow pre-holiday window to rein things in.

“We continue to see a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Colorado,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state epidemiologist.

“At this point, our hospital admission rate is the same as it was in May and is steadily increasing,” she said.

Polis said it had disproportionately affected the U.S. “because of our nation's lack of preparation and a national plan.”

Herlihy said combined efforts of the public physical distancing, mask-wearing and other measures were helping to decrease transmission by about 66 percent. But she said that those numbers needed to be significantly higher, more like 75 percent.

“I don’t believe this is Denver’s failing,” Hancock said, blaming the virus’s resurgence on the lack of a national strategy to contain COVID-19. “It is, rather, a failing by those who still refuse to believe in science, and those who do not take it seriously.”

“If we don’t do better in Colorado, then more Coloradans will die unnecessarily,” Gov. Jared Polis said during a news briefing.

Capacity in Denver hospitals’ intensive-care units is “diminishing,” said Bob McDonald, executive director of the city’s Department of Public Health and Environment. On Monday, 98 people were hospitalized, which is more than twice the number who were hospitalized in Denver at the start of the month, and 77% of intensive-care beds were occupied.

“Hospital systems could become overwhelmed in the next couple of weeks,” he said. “This has to stop.”

In the most recent two weeks, Denver has averaged 385 cases for every 100,000 people, and would need to get that down to 175 per 100,000 people to allow businesses to host more customers, McDonald said. So far, there’s no sign the city is making progress on stopping the virus’ spread, and waiting longer would make it even more difficult to control, he said.

Colorado health officials on Friday warned that the state could set a new record for coronavirus hospitalizations as soon as Nov. 10 with the disease continuing its rapid spread.

As of Friday, 663 people were hospitalized in Colorado with COVID-19, the highest level since May 4. Hospitalizations have been steadily rising since Oct. 17.

“To limit increasing infections and avoid peaks that could strain healthcare capacity over the next three months, a substantial increase in transmission control is needed.”

If the trend isn’t abated, Colorado could surpass its intensive-care unit capacity in January, or even as soon December if people father over the holidays and don’t abide by mask-wearing and social-distancing guidelines, health officials warn.

Colorado’s daily case count is higher than it’s been at any time during the pandemic.

Wednesday, 847 people were hospitalized statewide with confirmed COVID-19 infections, the highest number since April 24.

If transmission of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, continues at the current level, then Colorado’s hospitals will exceed capacity in their intensive-care units by late December — or sooner if people gather during the holidays, said Dr. Jon Samet, dean of the Colorado School of Public Health.

“All the data support that the epidemic is worsening,” he said, adding, “Holiday travel will be more risky as a result. Contacts among people not in the same households should be minimized.”

Colorado recorded 2,600 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, according to the Department of Public Health and Environment.

The percentage of tests coming back positive over the past seven days is 9.31%.

Transmission of the novel coronavirus is so rampant in Colorado that local public health officials are asking the state to take more aggressive steps — including county-level stay-at-home orders — to control the spread.

Colorado reported 3,384 new cases of the novel coronavirus Tuesday. Hospitalizations continued to reach record levels Tuesday, with 1,116 people in the hospital statewide with confirmed COVID-19, according to the Department of Public Health and Environment.

While 84% of the state’s intensive-care unit beds are in use, another serious threat to hospital capacity is staffing.

“Our hospital workers are getting sick because they are going to the grocery store, they are going to school to pick up their kids,” said Julie Lonborg, senior vice president of communications and media relations at the Colorado Hospital Association. “In doing that, they are catching this in community spread.”

COVID-19 hospitalizations fill ICU beds to capacity at Denver Health

Unread post by AHE »

For the past week, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Denver Health has filled to capacity several times. All 47 beds, have at times been taken because of a surge of COVID-19 patients.

Denver Health’s Chief Quality Officer Dr. Thomas MacKenzie says, “We are approaching the kind of numbers that New York faced back in the spring. I’m worried that we will run out of room in our hospitals in the City and County of Denver and throughout the metro area.”

Denver Health is now beginning to send overflow ICU patients to regular hospital rooms retrofitted for COVID patients. On Monday, a dozen of those rooms have been brought online. There are more available if needed.

The lack of ICU rooms is just one of the challenges facing Denver Health now.

“We are not only seeing a surge in COVID 19 patients, but we are seeing a lot of patients who have delayed necessary care this year and our hospital is busting at the seams with the mix of COVID and NON COVID patients,” MacKenzie said.

In Colorado, over the past seven days 84% of the state’s ICU hospitals beds have been in use.

“We’ll be at the point where we will have to make very tough decisions as to who gets an ICU bed and who doesn’t if there are none left in the city,” MacKenzie added.

In Colorado, an estimated one in 41 people are currently contagious with COVID-19, up from 1 in 49 people last week, according to Polis.

That means if you were to host a 10-person Thanksgiving dinner with members of other households, you have a 1 in 5 chance of being exposed to COVID-19, Polis warned.

As of Monday, 1,711 confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients were being hospitalized across the state.
