Only the DUMBEST Americans would advocate the "SWEDISH model"

Unread post by AHE »

Sweden's response to COVID-19 has been a grim tragedy in itself.

Any American suggesting that the USA adopt the "Swedish model" is a complete buffoon.

Sweden has a population of approximately 10.1 million. Sweden's current COVID-19 death toll is 5,890.

For context, NO OTHER NATION with a population of 10 million has a COVID-19 death toll that ridiculously high. No comparably populated nation even comes close.

In fact, Sweden's death toll is MORE THAN all other nations of 10 million people COMBINED
.

You read that correctly. If you COMBINE the COVID-19 deaths of all comparable sized nations (according to population), Sweden would still have more COVID-19 deaths. Do the math yourself.

There is only ONE place on Earth that you will find a comparably sized population with a more inept response to COVID-19.

Any guesses? That's right: the United States of America. Specifically, the state of Georgia
.

With a population of approximately 10.6 million, Georgia currently has 6,994 COVID-19 deaths.

Notably, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has refused to issue a statewide mask mandate that would have certainly prevented COVID-19 deaths in the state. Instead, the bumbling politician signed a toothless joke of an executive order.
If people are not in compliance, local authorities must warn them "about the health risks posed by not wearing a face mask or face covering" prior to issuing a citation.

Local mask requirements can't be enforced on residential property and can only be enforced on private property, including businesses, if the owner or occupant consents to enforcement, the order says.

Still need more convincing?

OK. Consult the literal horse's mouth, Anders Tegnell. Tegnell is the state epidemiologist and architect of Sweden's COVID-19 response.
Should we encounter the same disease, with exactly what we know about it today, I think we would land in doing in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done.

I think there is potential for improvement in what we have done in Sweden, clearly
. And it would be good to know more exactly what to shut down to prevent the spread of infection better.
You read that right. Tegnell's suggested improvement to prevent the spread of infection is to "shut down" aspects of Swedish society. Not re-open, not relax, but SHUT DOWN.

New infections and hospital admissions have surged in Sweden as the country battles a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic that officials had hoped its light-touch, anti-lockdown approach would mitigate.

“We consider the situation extremely serious,” the director of health and medical care services for Stockholm, Björn Eriksson, told the state broadcaster SVT this week. “We can expect noticeably more people needing hospital care over the coming weeks.

New infections are also surging, hitting a seven-day average of more than 4,000 this week against fewer than 500 at the beginning of October. The country recorded 4,635 new infections on Thursday.

Anders Tegnell, the country’s chief epidemiologist, told a press conference that case numbers had shown “a pretty big increase last week” and would “certainly increase” again this week, although perhaps not by quite as much.

In fact, all studies carried out so far suggest immunity in and around Stockholm is significantly lower than the national health agency predicted. Twenty per cent of Covid-19 tests in the capital last week were positive, compared with 16% and 8.4% in previous weeks, the national news agency TT reported.”

"Lena Einhorn was one of the early opponents of this strategy. In April, the 66-year-old filmmaker, author and former virologist, along with 21 other like-minded people, published a comprehensive and scientifically informed criticism of Sweden's coronavirus plan.

Speaking with DW, she said that Sweden has once again been hit harder than its neighbors, as was the case earlier this year. "And the difference is that they have different restrictions than we do," she said. Denmark has introduced a stoplight system to handle the pandemic, with far-reaching restrictions on public life. Norway, meanwhile, has made it obligatory to work from home in high-risk areas.

"If you walk through the streets in Stockholm or go into a store, no one there is wearing a face mask," said Einhorn. "You see only a few people with one on public transport. It's downright taboo to wear a mask."

Even though the scientific consensus wasn't quite clear at the start of the pandemic, it's now considered as established fact that the spread of the virus can be slowed with face masks that cover the mouth and nose. Masks are now a part of daily life in Norway, Finland and Denmark, said Einhorn."

There’s little evidence that herd immunity is helping Sweden combat the coronavirus, according to the country’s top epidemiologist.

“The issue of herd immunity is difficult,” Anders Tegnell said at a briefing in Stockholm on Tuesday. “We see no signs of immunity in the population that are slowing down the infection right now.”

In a recent OECD study, Sweden consistently ranked among the hardest hit nations in Europe, as measured by relative Covid mortality and infection rates. It was also the slowest at containing transmission.
