Indiana reported another record high of new coronavirus cases Friday, adding 1,832 to the state's tally, breaking last Friday's previous high. An additional 19 deaths were reported, bringing the state's totals to 131,493 cases and 3,534 deaths.

The Elkhart County Health Department on its Facebook page addressed what the post termed “a major disturbing increase” in the number of cases, noting that cases had been rising since mid-September with no sign of leveling. The post noted both of the area’s local hospitals are full.

Contrary to common belief, the post continued, the rise is not due to cases in schools but to overall community spread across all ages and in parts of the county.

IU Health told News 8 this includes an all-time high of COVID-19 patients.

“I suspect it’s from community spread. I suspect people are getting tired of all of this unfortunately and now that it’s getting cooler, people are going indoors more,” Michele Saysana, the chief quality and safety officer for IU Health, said Friday.

Dr. Pete Voss, the chief medical officer for the IU Health East Central Region, on Thursday reminded the community to wear masks, practice social distancing and prioritize hand-washing.

Indiana set a new single-day record for COVID-19 cases.

Indiana reported a single-day record of 3,649 new coronavirus cases Thursday. It’s the first time since the beginning of the pandemic the state exceeded 3,000 on a single day. The state's total is now 172,730 with a death toll of 4,024. The number of hospitalizations and new infections across the state continued to spike.

The Indiana Health Department's daily update of its coronavirus dashboard showed 1,733 Hoosiers are currently hospitalized with the coronavirus, the highest since early April. Of those, 509 are in intensive care, which is the most since May 6. Such hospitalizations have grown by more than 72% since Sept. 22—the day before Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb announced his decision to lift nearly all of Indiana's restrictions while extending the statewide mask mandate.

More than 70% of Indiana's ICU beds are also in use, according to the health department, leaving 565 beds available as of Thursday. Now, more of Indiana's ICU beds are filled than at any other point in the pandemic so far.

Indiana's seven-day rolling average for newly confirmed cases also rose to 2,511. That is the highest level the state has seen during the pandemic and nearly triple the seven-day rolling average of 858 newly confirmed cases the agency reported on Sept. 22.

Indiana's 33 newly recorded COVID-19 deaths raised the state's pandemic death toll to 4,260, including confirmed and presumed coronavirus infections.

Indiana is reporting 4,689 new cases of COVID-19 today. Total positive cases now number 210,374 since the pandemic began.

The 36 newly-reported deaths that occurred between Oct. 30 and Saturday bring the number of Hoosiers who died after testing positive for the virus to 4,383.

Indiana hospitals are reporting only 6 percent of the state's available ventilators are currently assigned to COVID-19 patients. Thirty percent of the state's available ICU beds are available, with COVID-19 patients currently using 24 percent of Indiana's bed capacity.

Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box says hospitals and healthcare workers in Indiana are swamped, “needing support now more than ever.”

More than 2,000 Hoosiers are in hospitals for treatment of COVID-19.

The state’s hospitals are currently seeing more coronavirus patients than at any other time in the pandemic. Staffing issues continue to be the greatest challenge, Box said, adding that there’s an ongoing need for additional reservists who would be “willing to serve.”
