Governor KIM REYNOLDS is appallingly inept

Unread post by AHE »

How does Iowa compare to other Midwest states with farm-based economies? Based on current data: Wisconsin, at 25, Nebraska 27.8, South Dakota 31, Missouri 35.8, Minnesota 39.1, and North Dakota 46.2, all lead Iowa's 49.5 deaths per 100,000 residents.

Iowa has very weak COVID-19 public health measures — the only state by policy to both not require mask use and to require students to return to school in person. Add to this widespread opening of bars, restaurants and sporting events. And, most recently, removal of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and White House guidelines for quarantining for 14 days after close contact with a COVID-19 positive case if both parties had been wearing masks.

universal mask use policy has been found to save lives.

Iowa will not relinquish its rank as the worst state in our region, in the second-worst country among G-7 nations. The primary failure of the U.K. and U.S. pandemic responses has been failures of leadership, together with denial of science and sidelining of their public health agencies. Both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and President Donald Trump, both false public health prophets, have been hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia.

Iowans have every right to express outrage at these failures in public health leadership that have cost so many lives, and demand a universal mask mandate and retraction of the recent weakened quarantine policy.

Iowa's government misallocated at least $21 million of federal assistance intended for COVID-19 relief and must correct the error by the end of the year or face having to repay the money, State Auditor Rob Sand says.

Iowa used the money from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act to help pay for a new accounting system.

Sand and the U.S. Treasury Department’s inspector general last week advised Gov. Kim Reynolds’ administration that the software is not an allowable use of the money, according to a review Sand released Monday.

Sand noted that the state had contracted for the work in 2019, which was before the pandemic, and concluded that it does not qualify.

“These expenditures are not ‘due to the public health emergency,’" Sand’s wrote in a letter last week to Iowa Department of Management Director Dave Roederer.

The money must be spent before the end of the year, and Sand advised Reynolds to redeploy it to COVID-19 related expenses. Failure to act will result in a net loss to Iowa taxpayers, he said.

Sand also questioned the earmarking of $448,449 in federal funds to pay the salaries of 21 of Reynolds' staffers between March 14 and June 30

Governor Reynolds is using the CARES Act money as a means to fund pet projects and make Iowa's budget appear flush with excess funds,” Celsi, of West Des Moines, wrote.
