Nearly two months into the school year, Illinois public health officials said they have verified COVID-19 outbreaks in at least 44 school buildings across the state, but they declined to say where those cases occurred and acknowledged they may not know the full scope of the virus’s spread in schools.

Unlike many other states, Illinois doesn’t publish the number of cases linked to schools or which schools have been affected — even as parents and educators try to assess whether in-person learning is safe.

8,668 Illinois children ages 5 to 17 have tested positive for the virus from Aug. 15, when schools started to reopen, to Oct. 2, state health officials said. That amounts to about 180 new infections among children each day, on average, since school returned.

The department publishes case counts for other facilities, including nursing homes and psychiatric hospitals. It also specifies the number of cases in people younger than 20 in each county.

Health officials said 3,059 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Illinois Thursday, posting the biggest single-day increase in reported infections since mid-May

The numbers reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health Thursday is the first time Illinois has exceeded 3,000 new coronavirus cases since May 14, when 3,239 new cases were reported, with the exception of 5,368 cases cases reported on September 4

Health officials also reported 32 additional coronavirus-related deaths Thursday. This brings the 7-day average of deaths in Illinois up to about 31, WGN’s data shows, the highest level since late June. This average has been rising over the past week, as the state reported 47 deaths on October 2 and 42 deaths Wednesday, higher single-day totals than have been seen in the state since late June.

Hospitalizations also remain well within state guidelines, with 1,755 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Wednesday night including 392 in intensive care and 163 on ventilators.

Illinois on Wednesday recorded its highest daily coronavirus-related death toll since June

The state on Wednesday reported 69 deaths of people with COVID-19 over a 24-hour period on Wednesday, bringing the state-reported death toll to 9,345 people in Illinois since the pandemic began.

“That’s always the pattern,” Ezike said. “A certain number of cases will go on to be hospitalizations, a certain number of hospitalizations will go on to be deaths and so the more cases, eventually you will get to more deaths. So the spike in cases that we’ve been seeing over the last six weeks, yes, unfortunately it is turning into additional mortality.”

As of Tuesday night, 2,338 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, the highest number of hospitalizations since June 10

502 were in intensive care units and 194 were on ventilators.

Officials reported 4,342 newly diagnosed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday

Illinois continues to experience a resurgence of the coronavirus, with the state now averaging more than 4,000 positive diagnoses a day over the past week and a record high number of newly confirmed daily cases announced Thursday.

Thursday’s case count of 4,942 tops the previous record of 4,554 new cases set six days earlier and comes as new restrictions, including a renewed prohibition on indoor dining and bar service, take effect over the next two days in southern Illinois and a wide swath of suburban Chicago.

There have now been 360,159 known cases of COVID-19 across Illinois since the pandemic began. With 44 additional fatalities announced Thursday, the statewide death toll stood at 9,387.

After rising for 11 straight days, the statewide positivity rate on coronavirus screenings was 5.7% on a seven-day average as of Wednesday, unchanged from a day earlier.

A day before, Illinois recorded its highest daily coronavirus-related death toll since June, as the state continues to see increases in metrics on deaths, daily cases and test positivity rate.
