The Wichita area's two major health systems said Wednesday that almost 150 coronavirus patients were hospitalized, their highest numbers since the pandemic began. The Ascension Via Christi system is trying to bring about 60 nurses from outside Kansas into the state to help with staffing, and it has converted space into two new units for COVID-19 patients.

The state Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday added 2,988 confirmed and probable cases to the state's count since Monday, a 3.3% increase that brought the pandemic total to 92,215. The state averaged 1,453 new cases a day for the seven days ending Wednesday

The state averaged 33 new hospitalizations a day for the seven days ending Wednesday. The state health department reported 91 new hospitalizations since Monday, bringing the total to 3,984 since the pandemic reached Kansas in early March.

The state also reported an additional 41 deaths since Monday, to bring the pandemic total to 1,087. Kansas averaged 11 additional deaths a day for the seven days ending Wednesday.

Kansas added a record-setting 5,418 new coronavirus cases Friday as hospitals warned that staffing was being seriously strained and the state's top public health official said many local officials “haven't done anything” to check the surge.

The increases in confirmed and probable cases brought the state's total to 97,633, a 5.9% increase from Wednesday. With the influx, the seven-day daily rolling average rose to 1,779 cases, which is almost three times as high as it was just a month ago, data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment shows.

The state also added 79 COVID-19 fatalities Friday to bring the total to 1,166. Deaths have more than doubled since mid-September.

State law allowed Kansas' 105 counties to opt out of a mandate for people to wear masks in public issued in July by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, and most did.

Staffing also is a growing problem, with the association’s data from Wednesday showing that 38% of hospitals anticipating shortages this week in the Kansas City area.

“Health care providers who are providing care to patients also go to the grocery store and are in the community, and if they get exposed, then they are having to quarantine like anyone else," Samuelson said.

Steve Stites, chief medical officer for the health system, said six hospitals in the region had a total of 277 COVID-19 patients Monday and that number had climbed to 318 by Friday morning. And he noted that COVID-19 is now the primary cause of hospital admissions, surpassing cancer, heart attacks and other diseases.

Governor Laura Kelly says Kansas saw 15 new deaths related to COVID-19 and a total of 5,920 new positive cases on Monday. She said this brings the state’s total since the beginning of the pandemic up to 1,181 deaths related to the virus 103,553 cases.

Gov. Kelly said as cases continue to spike statewide, hospital beds are filling up. She said there were 71 new hospitalizations over the weekend and all of the ICU beds in Wichita’s two major hospitals have been filled. She said if a hospital is at capacity, this hinders its ability to treat Kansans that need it the most. She said she commends Jefferson County and Lyon County Commissioners for passing mask mandates in the past week. She said the evidence is clear that masks work.

Dr. Norman said it is also increasingly more difficult for hospitals to keep beds staffed. He said staff has been staying home due to illness and waiting for test results. He said that hospitals needing to transfer patients from other states have also been turned down. He said Kansas hospitals are at capacity and unable to accept out of state patients to keep room for in-state patients.

Wichita hospitals are so overloaded with COVID-19 patients that some are being held in emergency rooms while waiting for beds to open up, according to the county’s top public health official.

“I just got a text saying the ERs are sitting down there with COVID positive patients just sitting in there on gurneys waiting for a room to open up,” Minns said. “So it is getting to the crisis — I hate using that word — but it’s getting to the crisis level.”

Hospitals are reaching capacity amid a coronavirus surge that has more than doubled current hospitalizations in two weeks. They have had to cut-off referrals from out-of-state hospitals and focus almost exclusively on patients from the Wichita metropolitan area and some patients from rural Kansas, Minns said.

Unfortunately, a lot of people just don’t accept this is real,” Minns said. “There’s still mediocre compliance with the mask mandate.”

Minns said he doesn’t think another shutdown of the economy is practical and businesses and individuals should take responsibility for their actions by practicing good hygiene, wearing masks, avoiding gatherings whenever possible and social distancing.

Statewide, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported 10 new deaths, 104 new hospitalizations and 7,234 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend. The increases are since Friday’s report. The number of new cases is a record high.

The state’s 104 new hospitalizations included patients from every age group over 9 years old. There were also 21 new ICU admission and seven more patients placed on ventilators.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Wednesday the state has 128,594 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and there have been 1,326 deaths since the outbreak started. Kansas is now only updating COVID-19 data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Kelly’s news conference Wednesday afternoon was to come only hours after state health department data showed that Kansas averaged 2,767 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases a day for the seven days ending Wednesday. That’s slightly above the previous record of 2,741, for the seven days ending Monday.

The state added 5,853 cases to its pandemic total since Monday, increasing it to 128,594. The state reported 60 new COVID-19-related deaths over two days, making the total 1,326.

Kansas reports new high for COVID-19 cases, begins tracking ER visits

Unread post by AHE »

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment released its latest COVID-19 data on Monday. The state reported 7,526 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday, a new high. There were also 46 new deaths and 95 new hospitalizations linked to the virus, with a monthly positive percentage of 19%.

The hospital summary now reports of total of 888 staffed ICU beds - 565 are in use and 240 are being used by patients with COVID-19. Of the total 907 ventilators available 207 are in use and 89 are being used by COVID-19 patients.

Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order last week requiring masks in counties that don’t have an ordinance in place. It takes effect Wednesday allowing county commissioners to put their own plans in place with the rising numbers.

HB 2016 is still in effect which means counties could also opt-out of the executive order.
