Facing down the possibility of at least 134 students in quarantine for two weeks, the Emmett School District requested additional coronavirus testing in a Tuesday evening press release.

Five staff members are also quarantined, according to data provided in the press release. Four new confirmed and nine probable coronavirus cases among students can be traced back to family members who already tested positive, Woods said. An additional 25 students and six staff members are considered “suspected” cases.

masks are not required in the Emmett School District.

Idaho’s public health districts reported 398 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total to 37,899 since the pandemic began in Idaho in March. The state also added 84 probable cases.

Idaho reported six new deaths on Tuesday, with one each in Bannock, Bonneville, Cassia, Gem, Payette and Madison counties. Idaho has recorded 466 deaths related to COVID-19 so far.

Health and Welfare reports that there have been 1,847 hospitalizations of people with COVID-19, 457 admissions to the ICU and 2,782 health care workers infected.

the state counted 564 new confirmed cases and saw its youngest COVID-19 fatality in the seven months the virus has been spreading in the Gem State.

“Conditions like diabetes, heart disease or lung problems can be invisible to the public and are more common than you might imagine,” Maxwell said. “That’s why taking steps to protect everyone around us from any illness we might be carrying is such an important step in slowing the spread of this disease and saving lives.”

That brings the statewide death toll to 493 people during the pandemic.

The state’s total number of cases, which has climbed quickly in the past few weeks, now stands at 40,907.

The confirmed cases combined with 106 new probable cases for a total of 670 — the second-most cases in a single day for Idaho during the pandemic

The state’s seven-day average increased to 524.3 — the highest since July 22.

Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center and the recently opened Idaho Falls Community Hospital.

Both are facing the same problem: The steep rise in coronavirus cases is straining staff and resources, leaving hospitals in the region near capacity and workers exhausted. Some days the issue is a lack of beds, and on other days it’s a lack of personnel.

“All hospitals in Eastern Idaho are strained, and we’re all close to capacity,” said Richard Nathan, an infectious disease specialist with the Idaho Falls Community Hospital. “It’s not just one specific hospital, we’re all stressed.”

On Oct. 1, the district reported 24 people were actively hospitalized, and as of Wednesday, that number had grown to 36 — the highest number of hospitalizations there on a given day since the pandemic began. Since the coronavirus outbreak reached Idaho, 275 people have been hospitalized within the health district boundaries.

Coleen Niemann, director of community relations at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC), said the area’s rise in hospitalizations has been distressing to say the least, especially given that it has seen a rise in trauma patients this year. The hospital is keeping up, but staff burnout is a big concern.

In Idaho, 221 COVID-19 patients are currently in the hospital, according to the latest hospitalization data from Oct. 14. Of those patients, 55 are currently in the intensive care unit (ICU).

“Now cases are higher even than they were in the second spike and, of course now that cases are going up, in another one to three weeks, we are going to see a big increase in hospitalizations again on top of what we have already got,” Pate said.

“The important thing to keep in mind is we are limited by staff,” Pate said. “You can have all the beds you want, but if you don’t have doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists to take care of people, then you still end up in trouble.”

To prevent hospitals from exceeding capacity, Idahoans should continue to wear a mask in public, keep at least six feet of distance from others and take recommended precautionary measures such as getting a flu shot, according to Pate.

People with COVID-19 in Northern Idaho soon may have to be sent to Portland or Seattle because the region’s hospitals are nearing capacity.

Kootenai Health hospital said in a statement Wednesday that their hospital is at 99% capacity for patients. The facility is also short-staffed, as demand for nurses grows with the rise in COVID-19 cases throughout the country, the statement said.

“If there is no room available, Kootenai Health is currently looking at hospitals in Seattle or Portland to find space to transfer patients, but it is very limited.”

Idaho is seeing its largest coronavirus spike since the pandemic began, with new cases increasing statewide by 46.5% percent over the past two weeks. Gov. Brad Little, a Republican, has declined to take steps such as requiring masks statewide to slow the spread of the virus.

Idaho is seeing its largest coronavirus spike since the pandemic began, with new cases increasing by 46.5% percent over the past two weeks.

Dr. Bart Hill, a vice president with St. Luke's Regional Health System, says Idaho's current approach hasn't worked to change the trajectory of the pandemic.

Little has maintained that the responsibility to slow the virus falls on individuals, urging people to wear masks, practice social distancing and wash hands.

Idaho officials reported 873 new COVID-19 cases and 4 new deaths on Tuesday bringing the total confirmed and probable cases reported since March to 54,663.

Idaho is also in the red zone for test positivity, indicating a rate at or above 10.1%, with the 2nd highest rate in the country.

The Gem State has seen an increase in new cases and an increase in test positivity over the last week.

Moments after hearing an Idaho hospital was overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients and looking at sending people as far away as Seattle for care, members of a regional health department board voted Thursday to repeal a local mask mandate.

“Most of our medical surgical beds at Kootenai Health are full,” Panhandle Health District epidemiologist Jeff Lee told board members in the state's third most populated county.

The hospital in Coeur d'Alene reached 99% capacity a day earlier, even after doubling up patients in rooms and buying more hospital beds. Idaho is one of several states where a surge of COVID-19 infections is overwhelming hospitals

“We're facing staff shortages, and we have a lot of physician fatigue. This has been going on for seven months — we're tired,” Lee said.

I personally do not care whether anybody wears a mask or not. If they want to be dumb enough to walk around and expose themselves and others, that's fine with me,” Kirby said. “Nobody's wearing the damned mask anyway. ... I'm sitting back and watching them catch it and die. Hopefully I'll live through it.”

Another member, Allen Banks, denied COVID-19 exists.

Something's making these people sick, and I'm pretty sure that it's not coronavirus, so the question that you should be asking is, 'What's making them sick?'” he told the medical professionals who testified.

Idaho is sixth in the nation for new coronavirus cases per capita, with the average number of confirmed cases increasing by more than 55% every day over the past two weeks.

Idaho reported 987 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, bringing the total to more than 56,600 since the pandemic began. Infections are thought to be higher because a lack of testing and other factors. At least 553 people have died of the virus, including seven reported Thursday.
