California has begun to see concerning upticks in coronavirus data

The increases include the rate of cases per capita, hospital emergency department visits for COVID-19 and new hospitalizations for confirmed or suspected cases, California Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. Mark Ghaly said.

Ghaly said the trends appear to be attributable to gathering and activities around the Labor Day holiday. Other factors could include recent reopening of businesses

Nearly eight months after California officially recorded its first death related to COVID-19, more than 16,000 others have died at the hands of the virus.

Patients 65 and older have accounted for roughly 74% of deaths in the state, and Latino people have comprised the largest share, roughly 48% of deaths.

California has reported more than 822,700 infections — more than any other state.

L.A. County, which reported 21 additional coronavirus related deaths and 1,324 new cases Friday, has accounted for the bulk of the state’s total infections and deaths. The majority of people who have died had underlying conditions. Hypertension and diabetes are the most common such conditions and have factored in more than half the county’s deaths.

Weight, age and gender have played a major role in a person’s risk for developing serious symptoms of COVID-19.

Counties around California reported their highest total of deaths from COVID-19 in nearly a month Thursday, and in the Bay Area, a majority of counties are reporting more new cases than a week ago, according to data compiled by this news organization.

Now, seven Bay Area counties report an increase in cases — four of which sustained over two weeks — and the region’s daily average has swelled by 10% in the past week.

In Alameda, Santa Clara, Solano and Napa counties, average daily cases have been climbing for two weeks. In San Francisco, they’ve increased 43.6% from a recent low a week ago but remain about even to two weeks ago.

The majority of the statewide deaths reported Thursday came in Southern California: 37 in San Bernardino County, 32 in Los Angeles County and 11 in Orange County.

In all, the state added 4,566 new cases to its ledger on Thursday, an increase of 0.5% from Wednesday. It has recorded 944,576 cases of COVID-19 since the the outbreak started.

The seven-day average in Wednesday’s latest figures compiled by this news organization rose to 4,833.71, the most since Sept. 2 and an increase of nearly 800 since Halloween. The 14-day positivity rate has jumped from about 2.6% in late October to 3.3% through Wednesday.

There also were seven new deaths recorded in the Bay Area, with three in Santa Clara County and two each in Contra Costa and Alameda counties. Santa Clara County has recorded 18 deaths from COVID-19 over the past four days.

In state hospitals, the news isn’t much better. The 3,419 patients confirmed to have COVID-19 marked the highest number of hospitalizations for the virus since the month began. Overall, the state has already seen 200 new hospitalizations in November. The number of those patients in the intensive-care unit is now at 901, marking the first time the number has surpassed 900 since Sept. 22.

California recorded more than 13,280 new cases Monday night, according to The Times’ coronavirus tracker. That is the highest daily total since the pandemic began and a sign of how quickly COVID-19 is spreading.

Last week, just 13 of California’s 58 counties were in the strictest tier, purple, indicating widespread transmission of the disease. Newsom announced Monday that the number would more than triple, to 41.

Over the seven-day period that ended Sunday, the state averaged 7,985 cases per day, a rate that has nearly doubled in the past two weeks, according to data compiled by The Times.

“This is simply the fastest increase California has seen since the beginning of this pandemic,” Newsom said.

For the seven-day period that ended Friday, an average of 10,981 people in California were reported to be infected daily — a number that has more than doubled in just the last two weeks.

For the first time, California has recorded three days in the last week where more than 13,000 new infections a day have been recorded.

And hospitalizations are up 61% statewide over just the last two weeks.

California’s average daily number of new coronavirus cases has tripled in the last month, a Times analysis has found, as pandemic conditions deteriorated dramatically around the state.

The coronavirus is now infecting more Californians daily than at any previous point in the COVID-19 pandemic, raising concerns about a new peak in coronavirus-related deaths by Christmas.

As of Saturday night, California was averaging more than 11,500 new coronavirus cases a day over the last seven days, more than triple the number a month earlier, on Oct. 21, which was nearly 3,200, according to a Times analysis.

COVID-19 hospitalizations have doubled in the last month, the analysis found. And COVID-19 deaths have suddenly begun to climb in recent days. In the last week, an average of 65 Californian deaths have been reported daily, a more than 50% increase from two weeks ago, when 43 fatalities were reported daily on average.

Daily deaths are also starting to climb in L.A. County. On Saturday, an average of 23 COVID-19 deaths a day were reported in Los Angeles County over the previous seven days; that’s double the figure from early November, when about 11 people were dying a day.

Cumulatively, California has recorded 1.1 million coronavirus cases and more than 18,700 deaths.

Hospitalizations in California due to confirmed or suspected cases of the coronavirus have risen more than 81% in the last two weeks, and ICU hospitalizations have increased 57.1%, Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of California's Health and Human Services Agency, said during a Tuesday press conference.

He noted that many intensive care units in parts of the state are on the brink of capacity.

California reported on Tuesday that there were 15,329 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday. The seven-day average of cases is 12,532.

We are sounding the alarm," Newsom said last week. "It is crucial that we act to decrease transmission and slow hospitalizations before the death count surges. We've done it before and we must do it again."

California recorded 18,350 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data released Wednesday by the Public Health Department.

The state also reported 106 deaths in the last day. During the height of the summer surge, the state had several days where deaths topped 100, and on July 31, the count soared to 218.

The state's positivity rate was 5.9% across 14 days Wednesday, compared with 3.9% two weeks ago, marking a 51% increase.

Hospitalizations statewide have increased 81% in the past two weeks and by more than 400 patients in a day.

“Statewide, I don’t believe we’ve ever seen as many hospital admissions increase like we did just in the past 24 hours,” state Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said at a Tuesday press briefing.

Ghaly has said about 12% of those infected will wind up in hospitals within two to three weeks.

California reported a record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations, reaching a somber milestone that shows the virus is more widespread than ever.

State officials reported 7,415 virus hospitalizations on Saturday, the latest data available, smashing California’s previous record of 7,170 in July. It was a dramatic leap from Friday’s figure of 6,972.

Hospitalizations in California have more than doubled in two weeks. The number of people in intensive care units due to the coronavirus is also near a record.

The state saw a new daily high for coronavirus cases, reaching 14,034 and an overall total of 1,212,968. An additional 20 deaths were reported for a total of 19,141.

As of Monday, 8,578 people are in California hospitals with COVID-19. Overall, 75% of ICU beds are occupied — and without intervention could reach 112% by Dec. 24, according to projections shared by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday.

"We are sounding the alarm," Newsom said this month. "The spread of COVID-19, if left unchecked, could quickly overwhelm our health care system and lead to catastrophic outcomes."

On Friday night, the California Department of Public Health released new numbers showing that Southern California as well as the San Joaquin Valley now face a critical shortage of ICU beds, with each area having less than 15% of its capacity available.

A county-by-county tally by The Times found that more than 22,300 coronavirus cases were reported across California on Friday alone, exceeding the record set Monday, when 21,848 cases were reported. The Times tallied 204 deaths reported Friday, the second highest total recorded in a single day of the entire pandemic.

Cumulatively, California has reported 1.3 million coronavirus cases and more than 19,700 deaths.

L.A. County has broken single-day coronavirus case records in three of the last four days this week. On Friday, 8,562 cases were reported, according to The Times’ tally, breaking the record set Thursday, when 7,713 were reported.

There were also 56 deaths recorded in L.A. County, a single-day tally not seen since Aug. 19.

The hard-hit county hit its fifth consecutive daily record for COVID-19 hospitalizations, with 2,769 people currently hospitalized. Of those, nearly a quarter are in intensive care, where numbers have tripled in the last six weeks.

Statewide over the last week, the state has averaged more than 17,800 new cases per day, according to data compiled by The Times.

Statewide, 9,065 Californians were hospitalized with a confirmed case as of Thursday — an all-time high and nearly double the number seen two weeks ago.

California is now recording an average of 100 COVID-19 deaths a day over the last week, a pace not seen since September. The state averaged 39 deaths a day over the seven-day period ending Nov. 3.

Over the last week, the state has averaged more than 17,800 new cases a day, according to data compiled by The Times. That’s quadruple the Nov. 3 average and dwarfs even the darkest days of the summertime surge, when the rolling average never topped 10,000. More Californians died of COVID-19 on Tuesday than any other day, the latest milestone in an accelerating pandemic that is infecting and hospitalizing residents at levels far eclipsing any seen before.

Tuesday’s death toll, 219, edged out the previous single-day high of 214

The seven-day fatality average, 135 Californians a day over the last week, is also at a level not seen since the darkest days of the state’s summertime surge.

Nearly 1,400 Californians have died of COVID-19 in the last 14 days. Since the pandemic began, the disease has killed more than 20,300 statewide.

The death toll has been highest in Los Angeles, the state’s most populous county. More than 8,000 Angelenos have died of COVID-19 — a fact that nearly brought Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer to tears during a briefing Wednesday.

There are 11,012 coronavirus-positive patients hospitalized statewide, according to the latest tally, with 2,506 of those in intensive care.

California has averaged nearly 27,000 new coronavirus cases a day over the last week, a new record. More Californians are also dying of COVID-19 than at any other point in the pandemic. The state has averaged 146 deaths a day over the last week — breaking a record set in August.

Cumulatively, the state has logged more than 1.48 million coronavirus cases and more than 20,600 COVID-19 deaths.

In Southern California, ICU availability fell to 7.7% on Thursday, down from 9% the day before, the latest data show. The state defines the region as Imperial, Inyo, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

The situation was even more dire in the San Joaquin Valley region, which is reporting 1.9% ICU availability, down from 4.2%. Numbers have also worsened in the Greater Sacramento area, which reported in at 13.3%, down from 14.3%; and the San Francisco Bay Area, which was at 17.8%, down from 20.9%

Rural Northern California remains in comparatively solid shape, at 30.3% ICU availability.

Statewide, an all-time high of 11,497 coronavirus-positive patients were hospitalized as of Wednesday, the most recent day for which complete data are available.

California has shattered another grim record — more than 42,000 coronavirus cases in a single day, breaking a record set just a week ago.

A Los Angeles Times county-by-county tally tallied 42,129 coronavirus cases across the state Monday. That’s the first time more than 40,000 cases have been reported by the state’s local health agencies in a single day.

On Sunday, there were 13,635 people in California hospitalized, the 16th consecutive day the record has been broken. COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide are now six times worse than they were in late October.

California has shattered yet another single-day record for COVID-19 deaths: 295, according to the Los Angeles Times county-by-county tally for Tuesday.

California is now averaging 175 COVID-19 deaths a day over the last week, a new record for the pandemic in the state.

Single-day COVID-19 death records were broken Tuesday in the counties of Los Angeles, with 93; San Diego, with 32; Santa Clara, with 24; Yolo, with nine; San Luis Obispo, with six; and Santa Cruz, with five.

The alarming figures came hours after Gov. Gavin Newsom disclosed Tuesday that state officials had been forced to order 5,000 body bags and 60 refrigerated storage units, each 53 feet long, for storing corpses.

Cumulatively, California has now reported 21,495 COVID-19 deaths and 1.65 million coronavirus cases.

COVID-19 hospitalizations have never been higher: As of Monday, there were 14,283 patients statewide who have tested positive for the coronavirus, including 3,081 in intensive care.

Ghaly said 12% of today’s newly diagnosed coronavirus cases are likely to require hospitalization. “And 12% of those that have been hospitalized are going to end up in our ICU,” he said.
