"Our forecast tool paints a very dark winter for us ahead. So I ask all of you to think about the mitigation that you can do to help us reduce this forecasting," Dr. Marjorie Bessel, chief clinical officer for Phoenix-based Banner Health, said during a briefing on Tuesday.

"Our tool shows that we'll get above 125% of our licensed bed capacity starting about Dec. 4, and that we will continue that for some extended period of time, likely through mid-January. We're asking everybody to do something now. Please consider your mitigation that you are undertaking as an individual, as a family and with your friends."

New cases have eclipsed 1,000 for 27 of the past 30 days, with 20 of those days seeing more than 2,000 new cases for the first time since the state's summer surge.

Arizona reported more than 6,700 new COVID-19 cases and 40 new known deaths Saturday, and the number of patients hospitalized for the disease continues to rise.

The 6,799 cases reported Saturday is a record-high daily case report, with the exception of Tuesday's addition of more than 10,300 cases, which was a catch-up from reporting delays over the long holiday weekend. The previous highest daily case report was 5,680 new cases on Friday.

Saturday's dashboard shows 90% of inpatient beds and 92% of ICU beds in use, which includes people being treated for COVID-19 and other conditions. COVID-19 patients were using 34% of all inpatient beds and 40% of ICU beds. Overall, 45% of ventilators were in use.

A group of eight Arizona health leaders asked the state this week for immediate actions on the worsening COVID-19 crisis, including a statewide curfew, no indoor dining at restaurants and a pause on group sports.

A team of University of Arizona researchers wrote in a memo to the state Health Department that a statewide shelter-in-place order could help avert a "catastrophe" in Arizona hospitals.

Identified COVID-19 cases in Arizona rose by 6,799 to 358,900 on Saturday, and 40 new known deaths were reported, bringing the total number of known deaths to 6,925, according to the daily report from the Arizona Department of Health Services.

On Wednesday, the Arizona Department of Health Services reported 6,058 COVID-19 cases and 54 deaths related to the disease.

Arizona is still seeing daily case reports in the top 10, though just barely. The 7-day rolling average for cases is down to 6,293, off from the high of 7,772 hit on December 14.

COVID-19 deaths in Arizona continue to rise. While Wednesday’s report is not among the highest, it is high enough to keep the 7-day average of deaths at the 92.7, the second highest recorded.

A sobering consequence of the high case numbers that Arizona continues to see comes in the form of record COVID-19 hospitalizations. 972 patients are in ICU, 70% of them are on ventilators, according to the numbers published by the health department. The state’s ICU beds are reported to be 93% full, a record since reporting began on March 27. COVID-19 “Inpatient,” or general acute care hospitalizations also posted a record high of 4,163.
