The Vanderburgh County Health Department and local government officials attributed much of the recent spike to Labor Day weekend, noting increases also were observed after Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

The reopening of schools, though, also seems to be a factor.

Labor Day activities are a key reason for the surge, Winnecke said.

The number of coronavirus patients in Indiana hospitals grew over the weekend to the highest level in nearly five months, state health officials said Monday.

The 1,238 COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Sunday marked the eighth straight day topping 1,000

Hospitalizations have increased nearly 65% since Sept. 19, just before Gov. Eric Holcomb decided to lift nearly all of Indiana’s restrictions on businesses and crowd sizes

Indiana’s seven-day rolling average of new cases continued growing at record levels, reaching 1,519 as of Sunday. That’s a 75% increase from two weeks earlier.

Six additional deaths were added Monday to the state’s toll, raising it to 3,795

Democratic governor candidate Woody Myers, a former state health commissioner, said Friday that tougher restrictions needed to be reinstated and that Holcomb’s steps have the state moving “in the wrong direction.”

Indiana reported its highest number of COVID-19 deaths since April, according to data released Tuesday by the state’s heath department.

The 48 deaths, which occurred over the past 12 days but were just reported on Tuesday, ranks has the third worst since the start of the pandemic. The highest number of deaths (50) was reported on April 22. The state has now exceeded a total of 4,000 confirmed or probable COVID-19 deaths since March. That figure includes 233 probable deaths reported based on clinical diagnoses in patients who were not tested for the virus.

The state also reported 1,551 new COVID cases, with a seven day daily moving average of 1,801.

The statewide number of hospitalizations is also rising sharply, now at the highest levels since May. The number of patients who need hospital care is a key metric watched by state health officials because as hospitals near capacity it begins to stress the care of all patients and could potentially lead to more deaths.

Indiana set a single day record for COVID-19 infections, reporting 953 cases, according to data released by the Indiana health department.

The seven-day moving average soared to another record high of 793. The surge has prompted Gov. Eric Holcomb to mandate mask-wearing across the state, starting on Monday. He previously left that decision to local authorities.

Hospitalizations have been slowly rising in Northwest Indiana due to COVID-19. That trend mirrors a statewide trend as well. However, there still remains a large supply of ventilators for the most seriously ill (82%). The availability of ICU beds stands at 36%.

ndiana reported the state’s third-highest single-day total of new coronavirus infections on Friday as the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 across the state continued to rise.

The 2,519 new infections reported by the Indiana State Department of Health fell short of the 2,880 new infections the agency reported Thursday, which was a daily high of newly reported cases in Indiana.

The department’s daily update of its coronavirus dashboard also showed 1,548 Hoosiers are currently hospitalized with the coronavirus, the most since May 5. Of those, 434 are in intensive care, which is the most since May 17.

Now, a greater percentage of Indiana's ICU beds are filled than at any other point in the pandemic so far. Almost 70% of beds are in use, according to the health department, leaving 2,150 available ICU beds as of Friday. The number of available ICU beds was more than 3,270 earlier in the pandemic.

Indiana’s seven-day rolling average for newly confirmed cases rose to 2,045. That is the highest level the state has seen during the pandemic and well more than double the seven-day rolling average of 858 newly confirmed cases the agency reported a month ago, on Sept. 22.

Indiana’s 27 newly recorded COVID-19 deaths raised the state’s pandemic death toll to 4,092, including confirmed and presumed coronavirus infections.

Indiana is continuing its record-setting increases in COVID-19 hospitalizations and new infections, state health officials said Tuesday as the state once again surpassed 4,000 new cases and reported 63 more deaths.

The newly reported deaths raised Indiana’s pandemic death toll to 4,731, including confirmed and presumed coronavirus infections, the Indiana State Department of Health said in its daily statistics update.

The 4,879 new infections reported Tuesday were Indiana’s second-highest daily count of newly reported COVID-19 cases and marked the sixth straight day the state reported more than 4,000 new cases.

Lake County represented 498 of the new infections, bringing the county’s total to 19,926 cases. There were seven new deaths reported, raising the county total to 400.

Indiana’s seven-day rolling average for newly confirmed cases rose to 4,490, according to Tuesday’s daily update of the state’s coronavirus dashboard. That is the highest level Indiana has seen during the pandemic and more than five times the seven-day rolling average of 858 newly confirmed cases the agency reported on Sept. 22.

Indiana’s hospitalizations were also at an all-time high, setting a record for the eighth straight day with 2,336 patients admitted. Of those hospitalized, 599 were in intensive care — the most since April 25.

Once more Indiana exceeded the 5,000 mark for cases, reporting 5,156 new COVID-19 cases and setting another new record. The state also added 31 deaths to its total, all but one of which came in the last week.

As the number of hospitalized patients continues to climb beyond 2,500 — more than any other point in this pandemic — hospitals across the state are now reporting just over 25% of intensive care unit beds are open. A third of ICU beds, the highest percentage yet, are now occupied by patients with COVID-19.

Friday saw 276 people admitted to the state’s hospitals for COVID-19 symptoms — and that number is considered a preliminary one.

How many people in Indiana hospitals with COVID-19: 2,544.

Intensive care unit bed availability: 26.3% of 2,162 beds. 30% of beds are occupied by COVID patients.

Ventilator availability: 77% of 2,812.
