IOWA Governor Kim Reynolds' irrational COVID-19 policies

Unread post by AHE »

The Republican governor announced the relaxed guideline during a press conference during which she acknowledged that rural counties in the northwest part of the state were suffering from uncontrolled community virus spread affecting all age groups.

With no public health mitigation strategies in place and old routines returning, “the virus is simply spreading from person to person during the normal course of daily activities," Reynolds said.

Reynolds long ago rejected issuing a statewide mask mandate and has largely declined to implement stricter public health mitigation strategies since reopening the state months ago.

Reynolds has also ordered school districts return to at least 50% in-person instruction, over the opposition of the state teachers' union and school leaders in cities such as Des Moines, Iowa City and Ames.

Iowa continues to see more than twice as many coronavirus infections as the national average, White House experts warned state officials this week.

"Community transmission has remained high across the state for the past month, with many preventable deaths," said a White House coronavirus task force report to Iowa leaders. It said the state had the sixth-highest coronavirus transmission rate in the country last week.

The experts also recommend testing teachers, staff in assisted-living centers, first-responders, and workers in jails and prisons.

In the past, the task force has recommended that Iowa require people to wear face masks in indoor public areas. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has encouraged mask use, but she has declined to invoke a mandate, saying it would be unenforceable.

The new report comes as Iowa sets records for COVID-19 hospitalizations, especially in the northwestern part of the state. On Thursday afternoon, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported that 449 people were hospitalized for the disease in Iowa, including 112 in intensive care units.

The health department also reported Thursday that 53 Iowa nursing homes were having coronavirus outbreaks affecting three or more residents each. That's nearly triple the number the state reported in mid-July.

As Iowa surpassed 100,000 confirmed coronavirus cases Monday and remained the fourth-highest state for rate of infection, the mayor of Des Moines expressed concern that President Donald Trump’s rally this week at the city’s airport could become a super-spreader event.

The state averaged 1,300 new cases per day over the past four days, and during that time there were an additional 46 deaths. As of Monday morning, confirmed Iowa had reported 100,052 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1,464 deaths from the disease since the pandemic started.

The seven-day rolling average of the positivity rate in Iowa has risen over the past two weeks, from 16.39% on Sept. 27 to 18.44% on Oct. 11

Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds has refused to implement a statewide order and has insisted that such local rules can’t be enforced.
