More than 10,000 Tennesseans have died from the coronavirus pandemic as of Wednesday, the latest grim milestone as the relentless virus stacks tragedy on tragedy amid the cruelest winter in a generation.

It took less than 11 months to reach this moment. The coronavirus was first detected in Tennessee on March 5, and it has since infected more than 10% of the state, killing faster and faster as it spread. It took approximately five months for the virus to kill the first 1,000 Tennesseans, then only four months to kill 4,000 more.
