The upward trend comes as Texas' governor allowed counties to reopen bars at half capacity

The expected surge in deaths also accounts for national data that show a decrease in mask wearing

Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Denton counties are showing upticks in emergency room visits because of COVID-19 and new COVID-19 hospital admissions, said Dr. Rajesh Nandy, associate professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s School of Public Health.

“Remember that the people going to the hospital today, they got sick a couple of weeks ago,” he said. “The decisions that you make now ... will have a big impact on what happens next week and the week after.”

Dr. Philip Huang, the director of the county’s health department, said officials are particularly concerned about the number of emergency room visits for COVID-19 symptoms, which has risen in recent weeks after declining steadily since July.

Texas health officials reported the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 broke through the 800,000-case level Tuesday amid a new surge of cases.

The 5,209 new cases reported Tuesday was the most this month so far, and the 80 previously unreported cases meant a 5,289.

An estimated 77,126 of those cases are active, an increase of almost 2,100 since Monday, and 4,053 of those cases required hospitalization.

The state reported just 64 COVID-19 fatalities Tuesday, raising the state’s pandemic death toll to 16,622.

Texas reported more than 4,100 people hospitalized with the coronavirus on Wednesday, its largest total in six weeks and one that comes amid rising infections in El Paso and North Texas.

Other key metrics were also up slightly from a week earlier, including the reported rolling average of new daily infections and the number of people testing positive for the virus.

Public health officials said the increase is likely due to a combination of factors, including pandemic fatigue and expanded reopenings, especially bars. Bars were only allowed to begin reopening in select counties on Wednesday, but many have already been opened for weeks after reclassifying as restaurants

I think there’s definitely getting to be a little fatigue on the prevention measures,” said Diana Cervantes, an epidemiologist at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. “In general, people are getting a little more lax, and there are more opportunities for close contact with schools and more businesses opening up.”

The number of hospitalized coronavirus patients has swung upward in parts of the state including West Texas, the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Panhandle and El Paso, where hospitalizations have reached an all-time high and the mayor warned of an “unprecedented number of new cases.”

Experts blame social events like birthday parties and game day gatherings for the recent upticks, and they say there is widespread fatigue for following stringent guidelines to wear masks, practice social distancing and avoid crowded indoor spaces. The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cited small family gatherings as an “increasing threat” this week.

There were at least 4,263 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals Thursday, according to the Department of State Health Services

One reason is “pandemic fatigue,” leading fewer people to wear masks or practice social distancing, he said. “They’re not seeing people get sick around them, and they’re just starting to be a little bit more permissive,” Ostrosky said.

Lubbock has more COVID-19 hospitalizations than it’s ever had, and at least one hospital is full. North-central Texas has seen coronavirus hospitalizations increase by about 30% since September, said Stephen Love, president of the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council.

The COVID-19 crisis worsened overnight as the number of active cases reached 8,061 active cases and a record high 449 hospitalizations.

El Paso health officials reported 684 new cases and three deaths overnight. The three deaths were all men in their 70s with underlying health conditions. The total number of cases is now 32,758, and the number of deaths reached 557.

Most concerning perhaps is the number of individuals hospitalized with the virus. There are now a record of 449 people in local hospitals and a record 129 people in ICU. Of those, 45 are on ventilators.

According to data from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, there are only seven ICU beds left in the El Paso region.

An Oklahoma family is being forced to consider treatment for COVID-19 in Texas after one of the state’s top doctors says open COVID-19 ICU hospital beds in Oklahoma are rare.

Lynn Cronemiller spoke to KFOR after he just came back home from sleeping in the bitter cold and the blazing heat outside his wife’s hospital room at the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center in Ada.

“Her last words were, ‘I don’t know how this is going to end up,'” Lynn Cronemiller said. “That’s the way we left.”

64-year-old Kathy Cronemiller hooked up to a ventilator. She’s been fighting COVID-19 for two weeks as her family continues to hope for a miracle.

“She just kept declining,” Lynn Cronemiller said.

The Ada hospital admits they do not have the type of specialty care Kathy needs. Kathy formed a blood clot in her leg and problems in her intestines.

All the hospitals said there were no COVID beds. Once the doctor would get on the phone, they wouldn’t have a bed.”

“This is a statewide problem now,” Dr. George Monks with the Oklahoma State Medical Association said. “We are not fine.”

Oklahoma has broken its record hospitalizations every day this week. Meanwhile, the state hasn’t released the specific details on the hospital surge plan.

Texas on Saturday reported 6,125 new cases of the coronavirus across the state — the highest level since August — with another 81 additional deaths.

17,456 Texas residents have died of the respiratory illness from the estimated 858,071 confirmed cases as of Saturday.

As businesses increase occupancy levels and bars now allowed to reopen at limited capacity — steps endorsed by recent gubernatorial decree — hospitalizations have spiked, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. "Hospitalizations are rising quickly," agency officials wrote on Twitter Wednesday. "Gatherings without masks and other #HealthyTexas steps are increasing community spread."

Dallas County on Sunday reported 703 new cases of COVID-19 and the county's 1,099th coronavirus-related death.

703 new cases added Sunday, 501 of which came from the Texas Department of State Health Services' electronic reporting system, is the highest daily total reported by Dallas County since late September.

More than two-thirds of those hospitalized with COVID-19 have been under 65 years old, while diabetes is an underlying health condition in about one-third of hospitalized patients.

In Texas, authorities are scrambling to shore up resources in El Paso, where intensive care units hit full capacity on Saturday and where covid-19 hospitalizations have nearly quadrupled to almost 800 in less than three weeks.

“It’s an extreme situation, because this means that all your contingency planning has been exhausted,” said Greg Bell, president of the Utah Hospital Association.

“I think all of us agree that the situation we have right now is unsustainable,” said Joe Dougherty, a spokesman for the Utah Department of Public Safety.

“We are set up for just a perfect storm — a conflagration,” said Megan Ranney, an emergency medicine professor at Brown University. “Right now, you can talk about there being lots of little burning fires across the country. And then Thanksgiving will be the wind that will whip this fire up into an absolute human disaster for our country.”

But she doubted that governments and hospitals around the country are ready. Even with good planning, she said, the mounting surge will be “emotionally and physically draining on everyone in the system.”

The Lone Star State had reported 910,124 cases since the start of the pandemic while California, which had led the nation in this woeful category for months, had 909,161, according to the tally.

But if Texas were an independent country, it would rank ninth in the world for total number of cases -- just ahead of Mexico, its neighbor to the south, which has 891,160, according to the Johns Hopkins University Covid-19 dashboard.

It was a different story in El Paso, Texas, where there has been a 200 percent rise in hospitalizations, where the convention center has been turned into a field hospital, and where residents have been urged to stay home for the next two weeks.

"If we continue on this trend, we risk detrimental effects to our entire health care system," the city's director of public health, Angela Mora, said. "For the sake of those hospitalized and the front line health care workers working tirelessly each day to care for them, we ask you to please stay home for two weeks and eliminate your interactions with those outside your household until we can flatten the curve."

Most of the cases in Texas –- and the 18,020 deaths -- were reported after Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican and Trump ally, reopened the state, NBC News statistics show.

The number of coronavirus cases reported by the Texas health department surpassed 900,000 on Saturday and more than 18,000 people in the state have now died due to COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

There were a reported 6,845 new cases and 90 additional deaths to bring the totals to 900,596 cases and 18,024 who have died since the pandemic began in March.

The true number of cases in Texas is likely higher though because many people haven’t been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

the number of hospitalizations increased by 69 to 5,696.

Texas has surpassed California in recording the highest number of positive coronavirus tests in the U.S. so far, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

As the coronavirus pandemic surges across the nation, the data from Sunday -- the most recent available -- says that there have been 937,317 cases in Texas, the nation's second-largest state.

California, the most populous state, has had 936,198 cases, followed by Florida with 807,412.

The Johns Hopkins data shows that Texas' seven-day rolling average of the positivity rate has risen over the last two weeks from 7.12% to 10.72%, while the seven-day rolling average of daily new cases rose from about 4,470 new cases per day to about 6,070.

Texas health officials have reported more than 18,000 deaths so far from COVID-19.
