As the coronavirus pandemic surges across the nation, the data from Sunday — the most recent available — says that there have been 938,503 cases in Texas, the nation's second-most populous state.

California, the most populous state, has had 938,119 cases, followed by Florida with 812,063.

The true number of infections is likely higher because many people haven’t been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

More than 29 million people live in Texas. The state's cases per 100,000 population is 3,269.84. By comparison, California — home to more than 39 million people — has a rate of 2,371.56 cases per 100,000.

Texas’ seven-day rolling average of the positivity rate has risen over the last two weeks from 7.12% to 10.72%. Nationwide, the positivity rate was 6.6%.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Texas rose from about 4,470 new cases per day to about 6,070.

Active cases were estimated at 105,658, the most since Aug. 26, and 63.5% more than when active cases bottomed out on Sept. 20. Almost 5,800 COVID-19 hospitalizations were reported in Texas Monday, 87.3% more than at the Sept. 20 low point.

Texas health officials have reported more than 18,000 deaths so far from COVID-19.

There were 993,065 confirmed cases on the books as of Friday morning, the latest NBC News figures showed.

And with Texas averaging about 7,000 new infections a day over the last two weeks, NBC News was projecting that the state would become the first to cross the million case threshold later Friday.

New coronavirus cases were up in Texas 40 percent, and in California 31 percent, the NBC News analysis showed.

Deaths in Texas were also up 10 percent over the last two weeks, for a total of 18,977 as of Friday morning, according to the analysis.

Texas on Sunday reported 5,404 new cases of the coronavirus, with almost 2,000 of those cases coming from the hard-hit El Paso area, state health officials said.

The state's total number of cases since the pandemic began is nearing 1 million, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, which puts the number of cases at more than 985,000.

The true number of infections is likely higher because many people haven't been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said Sunday that with 43 additional deaths reported, the state's death toll was at 18,743.

Health officials said that statewide, more than 6,000 people were hospitalized Sunday with COVID-19.

Texas is now the first state in the nation to record more than 1 million COVID-19 cases, a Houston Chronicle data analysis shows.

The statewide seven-day average is now at 8,210, the highest it's been since August. The state's positive test rate is now 11.24 percent, compared to 7.35 percent a month ago.

Statewide, there were nearly 8,800 new cases and 26 deaths reported. That’s lower than the local number of deaths because the state is about a day behind local data.

The seven-day rolling average of statewide coronavirus cases has been above the 11,000 mark for the past 11 days. The state is averaging about 187 deaths per day.

There were more than 9,300 patients Monday, an increase of 74 from the day before.

Across the country, COVID-19 has now surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death. More than 300,000 people in the United States have died this year from the coronavirus.
