The teacher's union in Orange County says the number of teachers resigning has increased due to the coronavirus pandemic.

WESH 2 News spoke with Ashley Craig, a teacher at Riverside Elementary in Orlando. She made the decision to resign during the pandemic for reasons which include constant changes and COVID-19.

From the start of the school year in 2019 to October, compared to the same time range this year, Orange County Public Schools said there was an increase of 29 teachers who left for various reasons.

While the district said COVID-19 is not tracked as a reason for leaving, they did say that 11 teachers left for health reasons, growing to 21 this year.

Seminole County Public Schools said they anticipate the pandemic to be a factor, but that may not be known until the end of the school year when final totals come in. Currently they have 40 teachers who have resigned, or retired this school year, but the school year isn't over yet. A total of 421 resigned, or retired last school year.
