The state has reported a total of 8,765 hospitalizations since the crisis started, with more than 700 of those occurring in the past week alone.

The Utah Department of Health on Saturday reported total ICU beds occupied is at 95.9% or (514 beds out of 536 available).

On top of that, the key referral center ICUs, which are the hospitals where most of the COVID-19 patients are, is at 101.7% or 468 patients for 460 beds.

ICUs are “brimming over,” said Dr. Brandon Webb, an infectious disease physician at Intermountain Medical Center, but it is not a surprise.

It was a “mathematical inevitability,” Webb said.

And because patients stay much longer in these ICUs than a medical ward, he said, “that creates a situation where we are just filling the bucket and never draining the bucket.”

The number of Utahns currently hospitalized with COVID-19 dipped slightly to 544, 24 fewer than Friday, UDOH reported. The total number of hospitalizations for the virus is 9,351.

The department reported 13 more deaths

With 1,716 new coronavirus cases reported Monday, Utah’s rate of new diagnoses continued to decline.

ICUs remain on the brink of overcrowding, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Intensive care units statewide had dropped from 100% occupancy about ten days ago, to 79% on Monday, with the state’s larger “referral” hospitals falling from 105% to 83% during the same timeframe.

“We don’t have the exact cause of it,” Vento said.

But with 166 COVID-19 patients in Utah’s ICUs as of Monday, hospitals still are far more full than they were when doctors and nurses reported feeling overwhelmed and exhausted during the summer — when ICUs peaked at just over 100 coronavirus patients. Utah’s ICUs have now exceeded those summertime highs continuously for ten weeks, since mid-October.

In total, 10,643 Utahns have been hospitalized in Utah for COVID-19, with more than a thousand admissions reported in the past two weeks.

Utah’s death toll from the coronavirus rose to 1,219 Monday, with five fatalities reported since Sunday
