Utah's number of COVID-19 cases has increased by a record-high 2,987 on Friday, with 17 more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

It's the second day in a row Utah has broken its own single-day case counts record. Seventeen reported deaths is also the most reported in a single day since the pandemic began — seven more than the previous high, set at 10 deaths on Nov. 1.

"The numbers being reported today are exactly what we've been warning Utah residents about for weeks," Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said in a news release. "They are why we've implored Utahns to adopt the behaviors that could have prevented us from reaching this point."

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 2,033, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 19.7%

The health department estimates there are now 35,290 active cases of the disease in Utah, meaning that roughly 1.1% of the state's population is thought to be currently infected with the disease.

Friday's new numbers indicate a 2.4% increase in positive cases since Thursday.

There are currently 395 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah — another record high. Of those, 167 are in intensive care unit beds, state data shows. About 76% of Utah's ICU beds are filled as of Friday, while about 55% of non-ICU beds are occupied, according to the health department.

Friday's totals give Utah 127,279 total confirmed cases, with 5,922 total hospitalizations and 649 total deaths from the disease since the pandemic began.

Utah's number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 2,956 on Saturday, just short of matching Friday's record-high total, with nine more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Utah surpassed the 2,000-case threshold for the first time on Oct. 30 and is nearing 3,000 cases per day, having broken its single-day record in two of the past three days. Friday's 17 deaths were also a single-day record.

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 2,213, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 19.9%

There are currently 410 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah. Of those, 175 are in intensive care unit beds, state data shows. About 76.6% of Utah's ICU beds are filled as of Saturday, while about 55.2% of non-ICU beds are occupied, according to the health department.

Saturday's totals give Utah 130,235 total confirmed cases, with 6,020 total hospitalizations and 658 total deaths from the disease since the pandemic began.

Under the new mask requirement, all Utah residents must wear masks in public and when within 6 feet of anyone they don't live with.

"Masks do not negatively affect our economy, and wearing them is the easiest way to slow the spread of the virus," the governor said. "We cannot afford to debate this issue any longer.

Under the mandate, businesses must require employees to wear masks and promote mask-wearing by patrons — and post signage accordingly. Businesses that do not comply are subject to fines.

Under the new restrictions, casual social gatherings are only permitted among people who live in the same household for the next two weeks.

"You should cancel plans with extended family and friends for the next two weeks.

Utah has reported 132,621 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 6,084 hospitalizations and 659 deaths.

Six more Utah residents have been killed by COVID-19 while 2,335 new cases were confirmed since yesterday, a number that feels shocking because it is now below the state's rolling seven-day average.

There are 446 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19. Total hospitalizations from the beginning of the outbreak are 6,395.

Utah reported a record-shattering 3,919 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, with record-high hospitalizations and the virus' deadliest single week since the pandemic began.

For the past week, the state has averaged 2,738 new positive test results a day, continuing a streak of new record highs, the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) reported.

Utah’s death toll from the coronavirus stood at 687 on Thursday, with nine fatalities reported since Wednesday

Hospitalizations continued to rise Thursday, with 468 Utah patients concurrently admitted, UDOH reported — another record high. More than 650 Utahns have been hospitalized in the past week, with 6,487 admitted since the pandemic began.

ICU staffs in Utah are above the 85% capacity that hospitals consider “effectively full,” Bell said — and some hospitals are at 100% ICU capacity.

Herbert stressed the guidelines that support his emergency orders announced Sunday are devised by public health experts. “We ask people to wear masks, certainly when you cannot social distance,” Herbert said.

The Utah Department of Health Sunday is reporting 2,667 new test-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state and eight new deaths from the disease.

It says 484 Utahns are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 — 186 of those patients in intensive care — and that 10,485 new people were tested over yesterday's numbers.

Overall, that brings the state to 153,808 total confirmed cases, 718 deaths and 6,769 hospitalizations since the pandemic began.

Over the past week, Utah is averaging 2,985 new COVID-19 cases reported per day and a positive test percentage of 24.3. One month ago, those numbers were 1,204 cases and 13.9%; on Sept. 15 they were 522 and 10.6%.

Saturday saw Utah's highest daily case total yet, with more than 5,300 cases reported. About 1,300 of those cases were from Friday; however, 4,000 new cases would still be the most Utah has reported in a single day.

Utah’s death toll from the coronavirus stood at 871 on Monday, with three fatalities reported since Sunday

Hospitalizations held steady on Monday, with 560 Utah patients concurrently admitted, UDOH reported. On average, 566 patients have been receiving treatment in Utah hospitals each day for the past week — a record-high average. And for the first time since the pandemic began, there have been more than 200 Utah coronavirus patients receiving intensive care for each day for a week.

At Utah’s major hospitals, ICUs have been about 87% full, on average, for the past week — slightly below the peak average of 92% a week ago, but above the 85% threshold that indicates those hospitals’ ICUs are effectively overwhelmed.

In total, 8,135 patients have been hospitalized in Utah for COVID-19, with more than 1,100 Utahns reported hospitalized for the virus in the past two weeks.
