Missouri on Thursday reported an increase of more than 1,500 confirmed COVID-19 cases and the highest number of hospitalizations for confirmed or suspected cases since the pandemic began.

Data from the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services showed a total of 137,156 confirmed cases and 2,259 deaths since March. That was 1,505 more cases and 23 more deaths than reported Wednesday.

The department also reported 1,344 Missourians were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases on Wednesday — up from 1,241 the previous day. The state averaged 1,204.9 hospitalizations in the previous seven days.

“However, we are distressed by the rising number of cases and what they mean in our community. We ask our community, and those across the country, to continue to take preventative measures against the spread of this virus.”

Missouri is among the top 10 states for new cases per 100,000 residents in the last seven days.

Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services said the update to its COVID-19 dashboard that showed 5,066 new COVID-19 cases Saturday was due to a "data extract error", which has also delayed the dashboard update on Sunday.

On Saturday, the department's dashboard showed 144,230 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 5,066 from the number reported Friday. That would have been more than double the largest increase of any other day during the pandemic.

The number of patients hospitalized because of COVID-19 across Missouri reached a record of more than 1,400 on Monday and Tuesday while the state’s public data dashboard was silent for four days because of technical issues.

COVID-19 hospitalizations eclipses previous records set the week before, when hospitalizations topped 1,300 for the first time on Oct. 7 and remained that high until the state’s last dashboard entry for Oct. 9.

The updated dashboard revealed that Missouri’s hospitalization numbers continued to rise, reaching 1,404 on Monday and 1,413 on Tuesday.

Across Missouri, the availability of patient beds in intensive care units continues to decrease, the hospital association reported.

ICU beds available in the state’s northwest region fell to just 19% of the total. Across the state, less than 31% of ICU beds were available.

Missourians must reduce transmission of the virus by social distancing, wearing a mask and washing hands, Dillon said.

Missouri has once again broken its own record for COVID-19 hospitalizations and seven-day positivity rate, putting its status at an alarming rate nationwide.

According to the state's coronavirus dashboard, the number of patients hospitalized across the state for the virus reached 1,443 Thursday, the highest ever. This is the third day in a row the state breaks its own record and reports more than 1,400 hospitalizations.

Hospitalizations have risen dramatically since the state loosened restrictions in mid-June. On June 16, 626 people were hospitalized, and that number dropped to 375 on July 7. It has nearly quadrupled since then.

The state has had more than 1,000 hospitalizations every day in October so far, compared to only two days in August. The average daily hospitalizations for October sits at 1,289 whereas it was 911 in August.

Some medical facilities in Kansas City, Mo., have turned away ambulances due to an influx of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients.

Metro hospitals and emergency departments reported Wednesday night high enough volumes of patients that facilities temporarily stopped accepting ambulances, a leading physician at St. Luke's Health System told The Kansas City Star.

"We're bursting at the seams in the metropolitan area, and really across the state and the region," said Larsen, who is also an emergency physician.

A leading coronavirus expert in St. Louis is warning that hospital workers are "over-worked and demoralized" after months of battling the coronavirus, and the worst may be yet to come.

Dr. Alex Garza of the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force said hospitalizations are getting higher and intensive care unit beds are filling up at a time when the flu season is about to create even more strain on the health care system.

Hospitalizations are at or near record levels in virtually every region except St. Louis, which was hit hardest in the spring. But, according to Garza, even St. Louis is seeing an uptick.

"Our cases, our hospitalizations, and our admissions numbers all continue at a dangerous ascent, into territory we haven't seen since early on in the pandemic," Garza said at a briefing Monday. "Unfortunately, we have erased every bit of progress that we've made this summer and fall."

The state on Tuesday reported another 1,524 confirmed cases, bringing the total since the onset of the pandemic to 159,625. The state also reported 25 more deaths. All told, 2,615 people in Missouri have died from COVID-19.

Since Tuesday, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Service’s coronavirus dashboard has posted a message that the total number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 has been underreported since Oct. 17. The note blamed “challenges entering data” to the portal used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for collecting daily hospitalizations around the country.

The project noted that the number of reported intensive care unit patients in Kansas had decreased from 80 to one without explanation. It said Wisconsin’s hospitalization figures stayed unexpectedly flat while other indicators worsened. And it said Georgia, Alabama, and Florida reported only partial updates to hospitalization data.

In Missouri, the loss of accurate hospitalization data comes as confirmed cases continue to rise. On Friday, Missouri reported 1,811 new cases of COVID-19, and 31 additional deaths. Since the onset of the pandemic, Missouri has cited 164,534 confirmed cases and 2,688 deaths.

Missouri also has seen a steady rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations since September. The state reached record levels of hospitalizations several times earlier this month, with every region except St. Louis seeing record or near-record spikes. Since July 7, when 375 people were hospitalized statewide, that number has nearly quadrupled to a peak of 1,465 hospitalizations on Oct. 14.

Illinois shattered its record on Saturday for new coronavirus cases, while Missouri counted nearly 3,000 new infections, a near-record, adding to the outbreak’s accelerating surge nationwide.

The 6,161 new cases registered in Illinois far exceeded the previous one-day high of 5,368, in early September. The leap pulled the state’s rolling seven-day average to a record pace of 4,342 new infections per day — more than twice as high as it was at the start of the month. The state also reported at least 63 new deaths tied to the virus.

We’re at full-fledged community spread and it doesn’t seem to be fazing people,” said Pam Walker, St. Louis’ former city health director, who now works as a consultant for local governments and other entities. “We just don’t get it in America that in order to stop it, we’re going to have to make sacrifices.”

In Missouri, the confirmation of 2,918 new cases of the virus was the state’s third-biggest single-day increase.

Missouri officials also announced 113 additional deaths Saturday — the state’s third-highest daily jump in fatalities linked to the disease.

"One of the real challenges is staffing and having enough people to be able to take care of these patients. There's furloughs, people laid off, and people get sick. Everyone in the ICU is tired," he explains.

Beyond that, it's the numbers affecting them.

ER wait time is longer since the hospital is full.

Inside the ICU, he says patients are staying longer than 10 days.

"Not only are there a lot of patients, but they’re hospitalized in the ICU for a long time. They get sicker and sicker and the largest percentage of them die, particularly the older population, so that adds to the stress," Dr. Tannehill said.

Dr. Tannehill reminds everyone to do their part by wearing masks, washing your hands, and to stay inside as much as possible.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Missouri continues to rise, reaching a new record high Friday.

A total of 1,612 Missourians were at hospitals across the state for the coronavirus, the most ever in a single day, according to the state's health department. The average hospitalizations for the month of October has been 1,390, an increase of almost 36% from September's average of 1,024.

"So this really drives home the point that there's no safe area right now within the region, we're getting admissions across the region and now we're seeing increased admissions from those urban areas," Garza said in Friday's briefing.
