"We're at war. And right here, right now, the virus is winning that war," Garza said. "It will take significant and decisive action through individual acts and determined public policy to get us through."

Parson responded, urging Missourians to "take personal responsibility," social distance, wear masks and limit gatherings — but he steered clear of a mandate, as he has throughout the pandemic.

Garza said at a briefing on Friday that individual behavior can no longer address the disaster, and called for coordinated action from leaders across the region and state. Hospital projections show that a delay of even one week would allow a far more severe crisis to develop, he said.

"We are all one big county now," he said. "The lack of a mask mandate in one county has implications for residents and health care professionals in other parts of the state."

Missouri reported on Friday 4,005 new coronavirus cases, clearing 4,000 new infections for the fourth straight day, and six of the last seven — and pushing the state's seven-day average to another record, 4,124. Missouri also reported on Friday 20 new virus deaths, which now total 3,359.

Missouri hospital leaders are imploring Gov. Mike Parson to require masks statewide as hospitals in Greene County and across the state report sustained high numbers of COVID-19 patients.

“The wolf is at the door,” Missouri Hospital Association President Herb Kuhn wrote in the letter to Parson dated Nov. 13. “A mask mandate may be unappealing to some, but it has become necessary.”

Gov. Parson, a Republican, has repeatedly declined to impose such requirements, leaving those decisions up to cities and counties
.

CoxHealth CEO Steve Edwards said on Twitter the hospital was reporting 133 inpatients with some predictions showing Cox could have as many as 180 to 200 COVID-19 patients in the next two weeks.

Missouri’s state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic will continue into next spring, Governor Mike Parson announced Thursday morning.

The governor extended the order through March 31, 2021. He first declared the state of emergency on March 13, which came six days after the state’s first confirmed coronavirus case.

Gov. Parson on Thursday said he will do everything he can to fight the virus while protecting the economy, school kids and the freedoms of Missourians.

He again stressed he will not enact a statewide face mask mandate.

The governor also said he won’t be making any mandates or issuing any orders over how Missourians celebrate the holidays and how many people they welcome into their homes.

As of Thursday morning, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is reporting a total of 257,822 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 3,507 deaths. Over the past week, the state is averaging 3,908 new cases a day. Missouri’s seven-day positivity rate is 23.7%.

Missouri deaths hit record

Unread post by AHE »

On Tuesday, Missouri reported 189 COVID-19 deaths, the largest number since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Post-Dispatch data.

Of those, 161 occurred in prior weeks, but were only recently identified as virus-related, through a review of death certificates. The Department of Health and Senior Services periodically reviews death certificates to verify fatality numbers. Lately these reviews have found large numbers of previously uncounted coronavirus deaths.

One occurred in September, 41 in October, and 119 earlier this month.

The state also reported 3,764 new cases of the virus on Tuesday.

Hospitalizations declined slightly, to 2,680 patients statewide with COVID-19, from 2,809 the day before. But the seven-day average continued to break records, hitting 2,708.

On average, hospitals here are reporting that 84% of staffed beds and 86% of staffed intensive care unit beds are full, according to the task force.

Illinois reported 125 more COVID-19 deaths, and 9,469 new cases on Tuesday.

More than 4,000 people in Missouri have died from the coronavirus and more than 300,000 have been infected with the disease, officials reported Tuesday, as a St. Louis-area health system said it was expanding a program that monitors patients with COVID-19 at home to relieve pressure on hospitals.

The state total released Tuesday includes 177 newly reported deaths, the second highest one-day toll during the pandemic, but state health officials noted the number reflects updated figures from prior months.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services said comparisons between deaths and death certificates resulted in 25 previously unreported deaths being added to October’s tally and an additional 113 deaths added for November. There have been 60 deaths in the last week, an average of nine per day, according to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard.

In all, 4,006 Missouri residents have died and 302,691 have tested positive for the virus.

Missouri reported nearly 4,000 new COVID-19 cases Thursday after two consecutive days of reporting fewer than 3,000 cases.

The state's health department reported a cumulative total of 309,368 cases of COVID-19 Thursday, an increase of 3,998 cases since Wednesday. It also reported 59 new deaths, bringing the state's death toll to 4,102.

In Illinois, public health officials reported 10,959 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday and a second consecutive day of record-high deaths.

The 192 fatalities from COVID-19 matched the toll from May 13, at the height of the initial wave of the disease in Illinois. That total is second only to the 238 reported Wednesday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said some data reported this week was delayed by the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Illinois now has 12,830 deaths among 759,562 coronavirus infections.

However, hospitals are still stressed, with staffed bed capacity at 82% and ICUs at 85% of their total staffed bed capacity.
