Wisconsin reported a record 2,817 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, according to Hopkins data. The state has reported four consecutive days of more than 2,000 new Covid-19 cases as of Sunday — a first for Wisconsin since the beginning of the pandemic.

“Wisconsin is now experiencing unprecedented, near-exponential growth of the number of Covid-19 cases in our state,” Gov. Tony Evers said in a video posted on Twitter Friday, adding that the spike has been driven by people between the ages of 18 and 24.

Wisconsin has hit a record for coronavirus cases reported in a single day as the Department of Health reported 1,726 new coronavirus cases, with two additional deaths Monday.

Health officials said late teens and early 20s are the fastest growing demographic for COVID-19 in Wisconsin.

It has been a real problem since the start of school at places like the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

One of the biggest challenged that we have is that some people just don't believe that this is a serious disease. Even to this day," Parisi said.

We are in crisis right now,” said Dr. Ryan Westergaard, Wisconsin’s chief medical officer.

Tuesday, Wisconsin recorded its highest single-day increase in deaths from COVID-19 since May. The state’s seven-day average in new confirmed cases was three times higher than a month ago and Wisconsin ranked third in new cases per capita over the past two weeks.

The number of people hospitalized, 640, was also an all-time high and an increase of 207 from seven days earlier. Hospitals in Green Bay and elsewhere in the state said they were near capacity.

We have to have people who believe that this is not a hoax, that this is a real thing and that people are dying from this disease,” Evers said.

The surge in cases in Wisconsin has led to schools that previously were open to in-person teaching going virtual at least for the short term.

As of Tuesday, nearly 120,000 people in the state had tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic. There have been 1,300 deaths, up by 17 since Monday.

Wisconsin set a record for newly confirmed cases on Saturday, with 2,817. There were 2,367 new cases reported Tuesday. On Sunday, the state broke its record for percentage of tests that came back positive, at 27%. By comparison, the national rate for positive tests was 4.5% as of Monday.

On Friday, Wisconsin ranked third behind Texas and California in terms of total new cases in the last seven days, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For new cases per capita, it is third behind the Dakotas

On Wednesday, Wisconsin logged its highest daily death toll, 27. The state’s Covid-19 case tracker, meanwhile, showed hospital beds statewide at 82% capacity on Friday.

Some public-health officials say they suspect that the large number of socially inclined students returning to the state at the end of August and start of September worked in tandem with another dynamic: a large number of state residents who don’t wear masks, they say, because many communities don’t require them or don’t enforce orders requiring them.

When it’s not enforced, you’re seeing very low mask-wearing rates,” said Jeff Pothof, chief quality officer with UW Health

Though the rise started with an upswing among 18- to 24-year-olds, it has been sustained in recent weeks by every other age group.

Wisconsin health officials report more than 1,600 people have tested positive for the coronavirus Monday.

According to Monday’s report, 8,560 tests came back and 1,696 were positive, or 19.81%. State officials say Wisconsin is averaging 2,395 cases a day for the past 7 days. A total 134,359 people in Wisconsin have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 since testing began in February.

The 7-day average percentage of positive tests, known as the positivity rate, is at 19.93%. The 14-day average is now at 19.46%.

Health officials say the death toll rose by four on Monday to 1,381.

New cases of coronavirus in Wisconsin were back over the 2,000 mark Tuesday as the state nears 1,400 dead from COVID-19 -- adding almost 100 deaths in one week.

The state’s death toll is 1,399, going up by 18, the fifth time in seven days it was in double digits.

There were 2,020 more positive coronavirus tests in the past 24 hour period in the Department of Health Services’s daily report, which is 17.48% of the 11,559 results received. Tests came back positive in 69 of the 72 counties.

Since the pandemic began, the state identified 136,379 cases of the coronavirus, the novel virus that causes COVID-19.

The state has 24,589 active coronavirus cases -- meaning 18.3% of all cases going back to February were diagnosed or experienced symptoms in the last 30 days and aren’t medically cleared. There are 108,371 people considered recovered, or 80.7% of cases.

There were 108 new hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours -- one less than the one-day record. The state now averages 86 COVID-19 hospitalizations per day over the past 7 days, a new high that’s 20 more people a day than the average one week ago. The hospitalization rate is steady at 5.7% of diagnosed cases.

a surge in COVID-19 across Wisconsin has turned it into one of the nation’s top coronavirus hot spots.

Wisconsin recently climbed to third in the nation in new COVID-19 cases per capita over the past seven days with 294 cases per 100,000 people, according to data collected by the New York Times. Only North and South Dakota had higher rates.

Katie Erickson, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, said the rise in cases is concerning and “people aren’t taking it as seriously as they should be.”

The state broke a single-day record of new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, with 3,132, CBS affiliate WDJT reported. That's the first time the state ever surpassed the 3,000 mark, according to health officials.

There are long lines to get tested and doctors are scrambling to find enough hospital beds.

The ThedaCare health care system in northeast Wisconsin says it has seen about a 500% increase in hospitalizations. More than 200 of its staffers are out sick or in quarantine due to the virus.

"I only have about five ICU beds left and about 10 medical surgical beds left in my entire health system. And I have seven hospitals that I take care of," ThedaCare President and CEO Dr. Imran Andrabi told CBS News.

The state of Wisconsin is reaching a crisis point in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Particularly in northeastern Wisconsin, hospitals are filling up and cases continue to spiral out of control.

The Wisconsin Hospital Association and a coalition of health care and business organizations have formed a coalition to encourage people to wear masks and take other precautions to check the surge in COVID-19 infections in the state.

What we know is that masks work,” said Eric Borgerding, president and CEO of the Wisconsin Hospital Association. “And [whether it’s through a mandate or through very vigilant use and encouragement of using masks, we know that it works/b].”

Wisconsin on Friday reported 2,988 new coronavirus cases — the second-highest daily total ever, behind only Thursday's record-shattering case count of more than 3,000.

The state Department of Health Services also reported 16 deaths due to the virus, bringing the death toll to 1,440.

Coronavirus outbreaks are devastating mink populations in the U.S., first in Utah, and now in Wisconsin. Over 12,000 mink have recently died from the virus, prompting dozens of farms to enter into quarantines.

After first contracting the virus in August, nearly 10,000 mink have died in Utah fur farms, a spokesperson from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) told CBS News on Friday.

The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) said that humans working on the farm that were infected with COVID-19 in July likely transferred the virus to the animals

Denmark, the world's largest producer of mink, announced it will kill about 1 million mink due to a large coronavirus outbreak at breeding farms, Reuters reports.

NBC News received a rare tour of one of thee units, which had previously reached its capacity of 28 beds. It’s currently down to about 20 patients. At first, the unit stretched just one hallway. Now, it’s four.

Wisconsin also set several records: most cases in a seven-day period (24,292)l the highest average cases per day (3,470) and the highest average coronavirus-related deaths per day (24).

Almost all of the state’s 72 counties now have what public health officials say is a “very high” level of the virus.

“It's terrifying,” said Dr. Katie Gavinski, who started working at UW Health in Madison this summer. “I'm very scared that if this doesn't stop soon, we're going to end up with a much bigger problem come winter and flu season.”

“I think, unfortunately, that it could get really, really terrible,” Gavinski said. “I fear for the reality that I think is coming.”

Wisconsin shattered its daily record for COVID-19 deaths and cases Tuesday, creating what state health officials called “a nightmare scenario” as cases continue to climb statewide.

The state Department of Health Services reported 64 deaths and 5,262 cases Tuesday, the most since the pandemic began, prompting a strong urging from Gov. Tony Evers and state health officials for Wisconsinites to stay home as much as possible.

“It’s a nightmare scenario, frankly, that this could get quite a bit worse in the next several weeks or months before it gets better,” Dr. Ryan Westergaard, a medical officer with the state health department, said on a media call with reporters.

The coronavirus has infected more than 206,000 people, with the most recent 100,000 infections occurring in the past 36 days, according to DHS. Total deaths have reached 1,852 and hospitalizations increased by 220 Tuesday, bringing the total to 10,636 patients. The seven-day average of cases has reached 3,975, compared with 700 two months ago.
