Donald Trump becomes 1st U.S. president to be impeached for a 2nd time

Unread post by AHE »

U.S. President Donald Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives for a historic second time Wednesday, charged with "incitement of insurrection" over the deadly mob siege of the Capitol in a swift and stunning collapse of his final days in office.

It was the most bipartisan presidential impeachment in modern times, more so than Bill Clinton's impeachment in 1998.

Trump "must go," Pelosi said. "He is a clear and present danger to the nation we all love."

Liz Cheney, chair of the House GOP Conference, on why she'll vote to impeach Donald Trump

Unread post by AHE »

"Much more will become clear in coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.

"I will vote to impeach the President."

Anthony Gonzalez votes to impeach

Unread post by AHE »

Ohio representative Anthony Gonzalez released the following statement:

“The President of the United States helped organized and incite a mob that attacked the United States Congress in an attempt to prevent us from completing our solemn duties as prescribed by the Constitution. In doing so, five people have died– including a Capitol Police Officer– and many more have been injured, and our democracy has been shaken,” said Gonzalez."

Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) voted to impeach President Trump

Unread post by AHE »

"There is no place in our democracy for a president who incites violence to overturn the result of a free and fair election. After Vice President Pence failed to act, the House was left with no choice but to impeach this dangerous and unfit president. I stood today with lawmakers from many different states and political backgrounds, and we said in no uncertain terms: democracy will not be intimidated. President Trump's dangerous behavior will remain a stain on our nation's history, but we will carry forward and ensure there is a peaceful transition of power on January 20th."

Rice explains his surprise vote to impeach

Unread post by AHE »

“I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.

The South Carolina Republican said that any “reasonable person” could tell that that Trump’s speech last Wednesday before the breach of the U.S. Capitol had “potential for violence.” He also slammed the president for tweeting while the Capitol was under attack.

"I was on the floor of the House of Representatives when the rioters were beating on the door with tear gas, zip tie restraints, and pipe bombs in their possession,” Rice said. “It is only by the grace of God and the blood of the Capitol Police that the death toll was not much, much higher.”

Rice continued by noting that in the week since the attack, “the President has not addressed the nation to ask for calm. He has not visited the injured and grieving. He has not offered condolences.”

“Yesterday in a press briefing at the border, he said his comments were 'perfectly appropriate,’” he wrote."

“The president of the United States incited a riot aiming to halt the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next. That riot led to five deaths.” Beutler went on: “I believe President Trump acted against his oath of office, so I will vote to impeach him.”

Statement from Rep. Katko on Articles of Impeachment

Unread post by AHE »

“It cannot be ignored that President Trump encouraged this insurrection – both on social media ahead of January 6th, and in his speech that day. By deliberately promoting baseless theories suggesting the election was somehow stolen, the president created a combustible environment of misinformation, disenfranchisement, and division. When this manifested in violent acts on January 6th, he refused to promptly and forcefully call it off, putting countless lives in danger.

“To allow the President of the United States to incite this attack without consequence is a direct threat to the future of our democracy. For that reason, I cannot sit by without taking action. I will vote to impeach this President."

Congressman Kinzinger Statement on Impeachment

Unread post by AHE »

“On January 6, 2021, the President of the United States encouraged an angry mob to storm the United States Capitol to stop the counting of electoral votes. This angry mob turned violent and caused destruction to our nation’s symbol of democracy. This insurrection led to countless injuries and the death of several people, including two of our U.S. Capitol Police Officers.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the President of the United States broke his oath of office and incited this insurrection. He used his position in the Executive to attack the Legislative. So in assessing the articles of impeachment brought before the House, I must consider: if these actions--the Article II branch inciting a deadly insurrection against the Article I branch--are not worthy of impeachment, then what is an impeachable offense?

“I will vote in favor of impeachment.”

Peter Meijer, on Impeachment Vote

Unread post by AHE »

“We saw profiles in courage during the assault on the Capitol… There was no such courage from the President,” Meijer said in a statement, adding that Trump “betrayed and misled millions with claims of a ‘stolen election.’”

“The one man who could have restored order, prevented the deaths of five Americans including a Capitol Police Officer, and avoided the desecration of our Capitol shrank from leadership when our country needed it most,” Meijer added.

Rep. Dan Newhouse opens up about his decision to support impeachment

Unread post by AHE »

"I felt that the president let us down, particularly when he knew what was going on and did not do all he could to stop the violence. I can’t condone that.”

Others, including myself, are responsible for not speaking out sooner, before the president misinformed and inflamed a violent mob who tore down the American flag and brutally beat Capitol Police officers.

“The things many of my constituents and Trump followers around the country have been told to believe over the last few months – that Congress could change the election – that’s just not true,” he said. “We should have been louder in helping people understand what the case truly is.”

Upton: I will vote to impeach

The Congress must hold President Trump to account and send a clear message that our country cannot and will not tolerate any effort by any President to impede the peaceful transfer of power from one President to the next. Thus, I will vote to impeach."

David Valadao shows courage in impeachment vote

Unread post by AHE »

“President Trump was, without question, a driving force in the catastrophic events that took place on January 6 by encouraging masses of rioters to incite violence on elected officials, staff members, and our representative democracy as a whole.”

“Based on the facts before me, I have to go with my gut and vote my conscience,” Valadao said. “I voted to impeach President Trump. His inciting rhetoric was un-American, abhorrent, and absolutely an impeachable offense. It’s time to put country over politics.”
